Last Ronin (Armored) (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Neca)) Review
Last Ronin (Armored)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Neca) (Neca)I just want to start this review off by saying if you haven't read The Last Ronin, do yourself a favor and check it out now. It's a five-part mini-series about the last Ninja Turtle seeking to avenge his fallen family in a Foot Clan-controlled New York, and a dark, intriguing, and overall amazing story. Merchandise for it has been slowly trickling in, such as a figure revealed by Playmates earlier this year. That very same day, NECA revealed that they're doing figures from it as well, starting with one of two different versions of the Ronin himself.

The packaging is standard NECA: an easy to open window box with an opening "fifth panel." The illustrations on the front and sides are pretty nice, and they made sure to credit the artists. As for the plastic tray on the inside, there are some ties holding in the figure, but all of the accessories are kept in place with a plastic overlay, but you have to cut a few ties off of that as well.

The figure itself stands around 6 1/2" tall, and is sculpted by Paul Harding, who's done a couple Turtle figures for NECA already, and boy howdy, did he nail this one. Let's start with the heads, and there's two of them; one has gritted teeth, and the other had an open. The hood is a separate piece that plugs into the back of the head, and can be replaced with two different bandana tails, one of which is longer than the other, and has a more windblown appearance.

The Ronin wears more clothing than the average Turtle, which is usually little to none. The clothes are nicely done here, with plenty of texture and wrinkling. Since this guy is heavily armed, there's plenty of weapon storage, including his belt and some thing on the back held onto the figure with real strings. The articulation blends in with the sculpt well, but there are a few areas where it's limited. The paint is very clean aside from some fuzziness around the mask, and the wash really makes it pop. The black lines in certain areas, giving him a more comic-like appearance, and I love how it looks on the heads.

The articulation is great, but not perfect. The head is a decent ball-joint with some tilt and turn, but its range is limited by the hood and shoulder armor. The arms move well with swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists, and the elbows are the double-jointed type NECA likes to use when possible, and this is one of those instances where it doesn't look awkward. The waist is also ball-jointed, and offers a good amount of tilt. The hips are the usual NECA type, being a ball-socket joint with a thigh swivel, and below that are double-hinged knees, swivel shins, and swivel/hinge ankles, with very deep bend. There's plenty of ways to pose him, but the head and waist could use more range.

A lot of accessories are included with this release, starting with the aforementioned extra head, hood, and bandana tails. The figure also has three different pairs of hands - closed, gripping, and open - along with a pair of goggles that can fit on his head or around his neck. The signature turtle weapons are also here: a katana, bo staff, sai, and nunchucks, along with a sheath for the sword. The sword+sheath and bo staff fit in the holster on the back, though you'll need to force them in, and the smaller weapons fit on the belt. Aside from all that, there's also one of the EMP tonfas used in the story, along with a smoke bomb, four shurikens, and a claw-like grappling hook, which has a real rope and can hang on the belt thanks to it. With plenty of interchangeable parts and tons of weapons, you'll find yourself posing him in different ways a lot.

I must say, I was pretty blown away by this figure. The great sculpt and paint, useful articulation, and plethora of accessories all help make the Ronin plenty of fun, and while I feel that the articulation could've been improved a bit, he's still definitely worth getting. Now I'm just wondering if NECA will tackle characters from the regular IDW comics.
