Deep Space Homer Simpsons (Super7) (Super7)Ever since its jump from mere shorts to a half-hour series, The Simpsons has been a merchandising juggernaut. Among the various items are a couple different toylines from companies like Mattel, Playmates, McFarlane, LEGO, and others, and in 2021, Super7 announced their acquisition of the license. The first wave of ULTIMATES for the show were due for release last summer, but as with most Super7 lines, they ended up being out a couple months late. They very recently showed up through Big Bad Toy Store, and Super7 should be shipping out direct orders soon, and I'm all the more excited to finally have one in-hand. The packaging is the standard Super7 style: a brown cardboard box containing the trapezoidal box with slipcover inside. The box is around the same height as the TMNT figures, but a little deeper. The clouds with logo are meant to resemble the show's intro, and there's nice illustrations on the back of both the slipcover and the main box. There's no bio on the back, just the name and air date of the episode the figure originated from. There's a few plastic ties holding in the figures, and all the accessories are secured in-place with extra plastic. Homer gets a pretty nice head sculpt, sporting a simple neutral look, though he gets two additional heads. The second head gives Homer his "woo-hoo" expression, and the third has a wide-open mouth, designed for eating. All three heads are pretty spot-on, and the two hairs on the top of the heads are made of a soft, rubbery material so they won't break. The heads are fully painted, rather than being mostly colored plastic, and there is pretty clean work for the most part. However, the neutral head has a small green mark on the back, and right by it is writing that reads "INSERT BRAIN HERE," hinting to the fact that this isn't just a regular Homer. Rather than giving Homer his regular outfit, Super7 decided to go with his astronaut uniform from "Deep Space Homer," which is no doubt a classic episode. The uniform is accurate to the episode, even going as far as to include "NASA" on his right shoulder. The suit has a coat of white paint, and the zipper has a metallic coat to it. There is some bleed here and there, with some rub-off from the blue parts. Homer stands about 7" tall, putting him in a larger scale than previous Simpsons figures. I included a shot of him with the Playmates Homer for comparison. For years, Simpsons figures have had pretty minimal articulation, but Super7 finally breaks that curse. Homer gets a ball-socket head with great up and down tilt, allowing him to look in a variety of directions. The swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists are surprisingly not as restricted as I thought they would be with the bulky suit, and great arm poses can be managed. The chest is a ball-joint that doesn't have too much range, but it's also a hinge joint that gives Homer some nice ab crunch. The hips are ball-socket joints rather than the usual swivel/hinge ones, and there's no thigh swivels, but the hips can twist a bit. Lastly, there's swivel/hinge knees and ankles, but these ankles don't have any rocker; they just turn side to side. Overall, the joints move well, and it's more than any past Simpsons figure. Homer gets a nice amount of accessories specific to the source episode, along with interchangeable parts. The two extra heads are great, but I would recommend heating them up before popping them on, because the sockets are pretty small and tight. Going with the closed hands are two different pairs of grips designed for the various accessories. The helmet fits securely over the head, with the neck of the suit keeping it on. In addition, there's a potato chip bag, along with seven individual chips, and an ant farm. The ant farm looks okay, but I wish the dirt was solid instead of transparent. Lastly, there's the ever important inanimate carbon rod that saved the day, and this one is cast in glow-in-the-dark plastic, giving it a radioactive feel. While Super7 has put out some impressive figures before, I don't think any have impressed me as much as this. He looks and feels much better than Super7's usual output, thanks to a full coat of paint and solid joints, and the accessories fit great with him. While the Playmates line is still one of my all-time favorites, I have a good feeling Super7 may challenge them for the best version of the world of Springfield in plastic form. - 1/22/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
