Last Ronin (Unarmored) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Neca) (Neca)If you enjoyed The Last Ronin, there's a follow-up to it out now: The Lost Years, which takes place both before and after the events of Ronin. While I haven't read it yet, I hope to pick it up soon. In the meantime, though, I have gotten the other Last Ronin figure by NECA, sporting a different look. The front of the packaging has a nice illustration that depicts a pivotal moment from the first issue, in which the Last Ronin comes close to taking his own life before passing out from his wounds. It's an attractive box that does the job well, and it's what you expect a NECA figure box to be, easy to open… once you get rid of all those plastic ties. As the case is with the armored version, the unarmored Last Ronin is sculpted by Paul Harding, and shares a good chunk of parts with the other version. The heads are different, with the default head sporting a calmer, but stern, look, and the other showing gritted teeth, a bit more on-edge, but nowhere near as much as the armored Ronin. The bandana tails are different as well, and they pop on and off easily so they can be swapped between the two heads, as well as the ones included with the armored version. Aside from the heads, the only other new tooling here are the upper body and upper arms. The bare chest and shoulders look great, and that's mainly because of all the details. There's present veins and scars, as well as rough, bumpy skin, since by this point, he's more than likely no longer a teenager. The reused parts are just as nice as before, with the clothes sporting nice texturing that make the figure less flat and more semi-realistic. The Last Ronin, - aw, heck, we've all read the story by now - Michelangelo, stands around 6 1/2" tall, and has very clean paint, including those black lines that invoke a comic feel. The unarmored Ronin shares the same articulation as the other version, will a ball-jointed head and midsection, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows (double-jointed), wrists, and ankles, ball-socket hips, swivel thighs, shins, and bandana tails, and double-hinged knees. The lack of clothing on the upper body give this version better range in the head and shoulders, though the shoulder joints are pretty tight. One thing I wish this version had was bicep swivels, to allow for more natural-looking arm poses. Still, he can manage all the poses the fully-dressed version can, if not more. This Ronin isn't super-loaded with accessories, but what he has fits well and also goes great with the armored version. The extra head and bandana tail are nice, and swap easily. The closed and gripping hands are recycled, but the flat palm hands and semi-pointing left are unique. They too swap easily, and I'm not worried about the pegs in spite of how thin they are. The sai, nunchucks, and tonfa are recycled as well, but the katana here is different, having been broken in half. These weapons go great with the armored version and vice versa, and you'll need both to give him his full arsenal. There's also four little throwing knives, though I'm not sure how he's supposed to hold them on account of their size. For non-weapons, the Ronin gets a book, a momento of Splinter, and a mouser. This mouser isn't a weird little chomping robot, but rather looks more like a cat. The head on it can turn side to side, though you'll likely have to force it free. The half-dressed Ronin proves to be just as good as his fully-clothed counterpart, thanks to his great appearance, plentiful articulation, and a good mix of reused and unique accessories. If you have both variants, you'll be given a ton of display options with all the extras. I'm surprised NECA is going beyond the Ronin himself and doing more characters, including his fallen family, but I'm hoping we get other key characters, such as Hiroto and Casey Marie, as well. - 2/4/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
