Moe Simpsons (Super7) (Super7)As I said before, Super7 is giving us a lot of variety in their Simpsons line. From regulars like Krusty and Mr. Burns, to one-shots and lesser-known characters such as Hank Scorpio and Drederick Tatum, there's a lot to choose from. So far, there's only one "normal" character out now: the surly bartender Moe Szyslak. Sporting a large brow, monkey-like nose, and overbite, Moe is far from a pretty face, but Super7 did a great job translating his crude design into three dimensions, far better than what Playmates did over twenty years ago. He includes two other portraits: one sports a big grin, and he's trying his best to hold it, and the other is a ticked-off yelling expression, a fitting reaction to Bart's prank calls. The yelling head looks a little odd, as the way the mouth is shaped makes it look better from its right. Still, all three heads look spot-on. Standing around 6 3/4" tall, Moe is nearly dressed in his usual attire. He has the t-shirt with bowtie, and the long pants with belt. Noticed I didn't mention his apron? I'll get to that in a bit. While the sculpt is nice, I have a main issue involving paint, and the problem is that there's not enough of it. The heads are fully painted, but the arms are solid yellow plastic. The sleeves on the arms are painted, but the torso is blue plastic. While the sleeves and torso blend together well, the head and arms don't, and I would've preferred if everything was painted. The legs have a few nicks here and there, mainly in the form of what appear to be little dents in the plastic. Moe's articulation is similar to Homer, but not quite as good. He gets a ball-jointed head with some decent tilt, but his hunched posture limits it a bit. The arms are outfitted with swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists, but the shoulders are pegged in at an angle, affecting their swivel motion. The chest is a ball-joint as well, but it's not as useful as Homer's. In fact, it's not useful at all because it has barely any tilt (It's The Worst all over again). There's also a swivel waist, ball-socket hips, and swivel/hinge knees and ankles. The hips have no twist, but the knees work well. Like Homer, I wish the ankles had rocker motion to allow for more dynamic poses, but I can live. Moe gets some of the best accessories out of the first wave, allowing for nice bartending displays. The extra heads are nice, and I used heat to pop them on the first time, but I haven't had to do so again so far. He also gets four sets of hands: relaxed, gripping, closed, and pointing. All of the hands swap easily, but the left arm has a looser fit, which can affect posing with his accessories. The standard fare is included, with a bar rag, a telephone, and a jar of pickled eggs. The telephone is a nice piece, thanks to the flexible cord, and it works great with the yelling head. There's also some episode-specific extras, starting with the "Flaming Moe," the drink idea Moe stole from Homer that propelled him into brief fame. The flame effect looks great, and you can actually slide it out to give yourself a plain, empty beer mug. Then we get the panda, which comes from "Cape Feare" (one of the best episodes). Measuring about 3 3/4" long and 2 1/4" tall, it sports some decent paint work, and has a ball-jointed head and swivel legs, giving it some poseability. The real big thing is the crate. The latch opens so the panda can be stored inside, and it also works as a makeshift bar top. Despite all that, Moe is missing one crucial item: his apron. Initial promo images showed that it would've been included, and it would've been cloth as well, but for some reason, it wasn't included with the final product. Super7 confirmed that it would be coming, though. Those who pre-ordered direct from them would get it soon, but for those who ordered outside of S7 direct, I read you would have to send them proof of purchase and your shipping address to get it. While it's good to know he'll be getting it, I wish he had it to begin with. Overall, Moe isn't a perfect figure. He looks great and gets some nice accessories, but the restrictions on articulation, lack of paint, and the fact he doesn't get his apron right away hold him back. Still, you can tell Super7 put a lot of effort into him, and the panda and crate may just be my favorite accessories ever done. The upcoming Duffman in wave two will go great with him, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Barney. He's Moe's best customer, after all. - 2/23/23 5/20/23 Update: Super7's been shipping out Moe aprons for some time now, and I finally got mine. It looks great on him, and having three bits of velcro - one in the back and two for each shoulder strap - makes it easy to put on. It really completes the character, but I hope they do an add-on pack with more extras for him. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
