Man Ray (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Neca)) Review
Man Ray
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Neca) (Neca)In case you haven't heard or your Targets haven't gotten any new NECA stock in a while, Haul-a-thon has recently returned. The event went down pretty well last year, though this time around, I haven't seen too much stock as of late. I've still gotten pretty lucky, having recently scored some new TMNT figures, including the next figure in the Adventures line: Man Ray.

Man Ray's sculptors (and fabricators) are credited as Tony Cipriano and Kushwara Studios, but they don't specify who did what. What is clear, however, is that they were aiming to replicate Ken Mitchroney's art style. The default portrait, sporting an angry shouting expression, looks great, though I will say the pupils are too big. If they were a little smaller, and shifted towards each other a little bit more, the head would look a bit nicer, but that's just my thoughts. The alternate smirking head is pretty nice as well, and both heads work to capture Ray's personality.

Ray stands roughly 7" tall from feet to antenna, but he also has pretty big fins, spanning 6" long, on his back (hence the wider box). The fins are a somewhat soft, rubbery material, so that it won't get in the way too much of articulation. Ray's a buff dude dressed in a leotard, and his outfit is captured accurately, though the wrist bands on the figure are bigger than they should be. The paint is alright for the most part, though the "ink" outlines are fuzzy and uneven in certain areas. One cool detail is that the scales aren't just painted, they're sculpted as well, and it's a nice touch.

Ray's articulation is pretty in-line with NECA's usual Turtle fare, starting with a ball-jointed head. It moves forward and back pretty well, but any other kind of motion is restricted due to its design. The shoulders and wrists are swivel/hinge joints, and while the elbows look to be so as well, they only hinge. The swivel biceps make up for it, though. The chest and tail are both ball-joints, and the tail has a bendy wire inside of it. Lastly, there's the usual leg articulation, with ball/socket hips, swivel thighs, double-hinged knees, and swivel/hinge ankles. You can manage some impressive poses, but keep in mind there are joints that need heat to get moving, namely the wrists and ankles.

The last Adventures release, Slash, had a couple nice accessories, but Man Ray is a good deal more outfitted. The alternate head is a great addition, but it's a tight fit, so make sure to heat it up before popping it on. Eight hands are included, with 2x fists, 2x wide gripping hands, 2x style pose hands, a tight grip right, and a relaxed left. The hands give some resistance when swapping, but you won't need any heat to switch them up. Ray also gets a harpoon gun to wield, and two slug figures: Bubbla, the weird fish-lobster thing that died as quickly as he was introduced, and a regular, non-mutant, non-ninja sea turtle. Neither of the little guys have any articulation, but they look great.

It's nice to see more releases in the TMNT Adventures line after the great Slash we got, and Man Ray is a rather enjoyable figure, and in my eyes, the best one so far. Sure, there's the usual paint slip-up or tight joint here and there, but those are mostly minor issues. Besides, I'd gladly take this guy over his lame cartoon counterpart any day of the week.
