Pizza Tossin' Raph (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Collection) Review
Pizza Tossin' Raph
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Collection (Playmates)With everyone from NECA to Super7 to even Hasbro producing Ninja Turtles, Playmates has been trying their hardest to stay in the Turtle market. They've done some stuff in 6" scale, and we got figures from the new movie coming soon, but they've also been recreating figures from their original toyline. Recently, it's been branching out into niche sublines such as Storage Shell, Sewer Heroes, Toon, and now those weird Pizza Tossin' Turtles from 1994. Well, three of them; Donatello isn't part of these recent reissues for some reason.

With the packaging, they managed to use the same graphics they used nearly thirty years ago, and it definitely looks nice, utilizing a lot of the same elements as the original release. For some reason though, Playmates chose to use a zip tie to hold the figure into the tray. They can be tricky to remove without scissors, I feel another method would've been better.

When Pizza Tossin' Raph was originally made, I believe Varner Studios provided the sculpt, and it looks to be the exact same tooling here. Standing 5" tall, Raph is a little chunkier than the usual Turtle figure, as to accommodate the action feature. His body is covered in warts and scuffs, and his head has a crazy expression with bug eyes and a big grimace, fitting for a guy with a piping hot pizza oven in his chest. I love how wild the sculpt looks, and it's a good example of how old-school Playmates wasn't afraid to do whatever with the license. The paint is good aside from some fuzzy edges, especially around the white parts, and the stickers are nicely applied.

The figure moves how almost every other old Turtle figure moves, with swivels at the head, shoulders, and wrists, along with ball/socket hips. The action feature works easily; there's six small pizzas that fit into a slot in the back, and pushing back the right arm fires them out of the oven, one-by-one. The pizzas launch out quickly and cover a good amount of distance, and the feature is fun for everyone. However, you have to make sure the right shoulder is in the right position for the feature to work.

Now we move on to some pretty funky accessories, a staple of old Turtle figures. There's a "Tomato Sauce Sai" with a bent handle, and there's another piece connecting it to the oven. Why would it need to do that? Do the oven make it scorching hot? Is the sai designed to fire sauce? Okay, the "Sauce Splatterin' Gun" fulfills that role, but still, it's weird. Finally, there's a "Overcooked Crosshairs Eye Sight" that plugs into a peg on top of the oven, and lines up perfectly with his eye. None of the accessories are painted, save for stickers on the firing pizzas, but most of them are done in a nice purple grape color. The original release could also have them in orange, but it looks like that won't be happening with the re-release.

Even after all these years, Playmates hasn't been able to recreate that magic they once had with Turtles, but they're still able to introduce new generations to what made them so fun back in the day. Getting re-releases of the more unique, weird figures is definitely something I'm hoping we see more of. My only real nit is that these figures are Walmart-exclusive, which means you have just about as much of a chance of finding these as you will a unicorn.
