Tall Thug and Short Gangster (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon) Review
Tall Thug and Short Gangster
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)It's been a great toy weekend for me. Yesterday was the Maryland Toy Expo, and I managed to pick up quite a haul there, along with a few things outside of the event. One of those things was another NECA Turtles two-pack. I know some new items are hitting Target right now, but I didn't find any of them, though I did find something I've been trying to get my hands on.

Like the Scrag I covered some time ago, the "Tall Thug" only appeared in the first season of the 80's TMNT cartoon. His name's actually Dopey, but I guess they had to change it to avoid stepping on Disney's toes. Eric Barnett provided Dopey's sculpt, and he looks very spot-on to the show. He wears a big hat covering up his beady little eyes, along with a gray jacket and tall boots. His head has exaggerated features, such as a big nose, and it's just how he's supposed to look. He stands about 6 3/4" tall up to the tip of his hat, and sports mostly clean paint save for a few marks here and there. His jacket has noticeable seams lines on the sides, and there's a small crack in the paint on his right shoulder, two more nits to his appearance.

The usual articulation for the line is present on Dopey, with a ball-jointed head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and ankles, double-swivel/hinge elbows, swivel waist, thighs, and boots, ball/socket hips, and double-hinged knees. The joints seemed stiff at first, but it wasn't long before they moved with no issues, aside from one of the knee hinges needing hot water to get moving. While the double elbows are useful, they still don't look right, forming a U-shape on the arm. I wish NECA would do a Revoltech-styled joint for the elbow instead, since it'll look better and still allow nice bend.

When Bebop and Rocksteady's gang got mutated, Dopey lost the genetic lottery, as he got the face of a shrew. His nose is huge and his mouth is misshapen, but the head is done rather well here, and his eyes are still under his hat. As if Dopey couldn't get any more unlucky, his right hand became twice as big; I don't think it ever looked like this in-show, but it's a nice addition. The alternate head and right forearm require heat to pop on, but it helps create a crazy different look for the guy. Other than that, he gets a baseball bat, a gaff hook, and five different hands: two fists, two grips, and a left grip for the hook.

The other half of the set is the "Short Gangster": Dumbo. He certainly looks like a dumbo, being a short, fat, bald guy with a snaggletooth. At 4 1/2", he's one of the smaller figures in the line, but he looks just as accurate as Dopey. He has more traditional civilian clothes, with wristbands, jeans, and a sleeveless jacket. The paint is good aside from some bleed around the wrist bands, and I feel mouth outline could look a bit better. He has a bit less articulation than Dopey, with a ball-jointed head and waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles, ball/socket hips, and swivel thighs. All of the joints move well, but his waist is a little locked down due to the sculpt.

Through mutagen, Dumbo turned from an ugly thug to a cute, fuzzy creature. Some people say he's a dog, but he really looks more like a sloth. The transformation is done through both an extra head and an alternate pair of arms; the head looks very nice and a little bit adorable as well, and the mutant arms get the same movement as the regular arms save for the wrists only being swivels. The colors of the head and arms don't match up, but that's accurate to the show. The human neck is still there, but the sloth head covers it up. As for human extras, Dumbo gets closed and gripping hands, along with a small mallet and a metal chain.

Despite barely appearing in the show, Bebop and Rocksteady's partners in crime were pretty memorable characters for some reason, and many wish they appeared more. Thanks for these figures, you can create all the mischief they could've caused if they stuck around. It's too bad Scrag was a Lootcrate exclusive, as while I got him, others will have to spend a lot for him, so here's to hoping NECA can give him a proper release someday.
