Bluto (Yellow Pants) Popeye (Boss Fight Studio) (Boss Fight Studio)After getting Boss Fight Studio's excellent Popeye and Olive Oyl figures a few months ago, I felt it was time to get another figure from their Popeye Classics line. And who better to get than Popeye's long-time rival Bluto? Starting right off the bat, I'll point out that Bluto, unlike Popeye or Olive, has no interchangeable heads; just the one portrait. However, it looks great. His eyes are shut tight, and he's got a sinister grin on his face. His hair and beard bear great detail, and unlike the glossy skin, they and the teeth are painted. The nose has a stray mark on it, unfortunately, and there is a bit of missing paint for the facial hair. The hat is a separate piece held onto Bluto's head by a magnet, but said magnet isn't very strong. As with the others, Bluto is sculpted by Paul Harding. Bluto towers over the other figures at a little bit over 6" tall, and he's equally large in shape. His torso is a huge, solid chunk of plastic, and it gives a quite a bit of heft to him. The limbs are also pretty solid, and it'll definitely make him more imposing than Popeye himself (yet Popeye always wins their fights). The paint is nice with clean edges, but I have a small nitpick; the buttons are merely painted, rather than sculpted. I assume it's like this to make repaints easier. Bluto moves the same as the others, with ball-jointed head, waist, hips, and ankles, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and knees, and swivel wrists. While the ball-joints are a little tight and will need to be broken free a bit, everything moves well, and some good poses can be achieved. In addition, the feet are sculpted with the toes bent up, giving Bluto potential for dynamic poses. Sadly, he's pretty lacking on accessories, having only a removable hat and three sets of hands: gripping, closed, and relaxed. If you want more extras, I'd suggest grabbing the old Mezco figures and giving him some of their stuff. Lack of accessories and weak magnet for the hat aside, Bluto is great. He's a big, chunky figure with pretty good movement, and he'll go well with the other figures in the line. There's also a neat two-pack of him and Popeye wearing differently colored clothes and covered in bruises, and I may have to get that at some point. - 9/26/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
