Napoleon Bonafrog (Colossus of the Swamp) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)The 1987 TMNT series has not only provided NECA a wide character selection, but plenty of potential for character variants. We've seen a few already, with Catwoman April, Dark Turtle Donatello, and a few different versions of Bebop and Rocksteady, and there's a couple more in the pipeline now. We're even getting ones that weren't in the show! For now, the latest variant is of Napoleon Bonafrog, based off his hulked-up form from "Napoleon Bonafrog: Colossus of the Swamps." As usual, Dan Elson is doing the packaging art for the single releases, and it looks just as great as always. It resembles the old FHE tapes well, and I'm now wanting those get-ups for B&R as figures. The box is also huge, as to house the size of this figure. The "colossus" version of Napoleon is sculpted by Brodie Perkins, and he's quite a different design from the regular version of the Punk Frog. His head sports sunken eyes along with big lips and cheeks, and it's accurate to how he looked in the source material. The lower jaw is hinged, which is a neat touch. A second, less-menacing head is included, sporting a dopey, somewhat worried look. Both heads sport decent paint and accurate colors, though there are a few areas of bleed and marks. At 8" tall, Napoleon isn't the tallest figure in the line, but he certainly is the chunkiest. As a big, muscular guy, he's made out of solid plastic, giving him some serious heft. His build is accurate to the show, and the articulation blends in well with the sculpt. Napoleon's jacket and shorts are still here, albeit with missing sleeves and a couple rips and tears. The paint on the body sports clean lines and edges, but the lack of shading on the yellow part of the jacket is noticeable, as is the lack of green on the exposed part of the torso on his lower half. As mentioned earlier, the default head for Napoleon has a hinged jaw, but it can only move a little bit. Still, it's enough to add a bit more to the character. Other than that, the articulation is the usual for the line, with barbell head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and ankles, swivel biceps, waist, and thighs, double-hinged elbows and knees, and ball-jointed hips. While I had to pour hot water on the wrists to get them moving, everything else moved fine with plenty of range, and the joints are tight enough to support the figure. The only issue is that he likes to pop apart at the waist. Compared to most of the figures before him, Napoleon is surprisingly light on accessories. He gets an extra head which is good, but you will need to heat it up to pop it on the ball, as well as three sets of hands - closed, gripping, and open. The "muta-shooter" that caused Napoleon's transformation is included here, looking very much like it did in the show, and while he can't really wield it, you can give it to Shredder or another character. Speaking of accessories meant for other figures, new heads for Genghis and the regular Napoleon are included. Napoleon has a worried look, while Genghis has a big smile. Both heads were sculpted by May Thamtarana, and are more accurate to the show than the original heads. I had no issues popping Genghis' new head onto his body, but Napoleon's required heat. Colossus Napoleon is a big figure that's a lot of fun, but my main complaint is the price. He's $55, around the price of one of the two-packs or a single Super7 figure. I get why, he's a heavy figure with all-new tooling, but I'd feel better if he was $5 or $10 less. Still, if you can suck up the cost, you'll find he's one of the more enjoyable figures in the line, and he's tied with Bugman for my favorite toon figure of the year. - 9/30/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
