Ryu (Street Fighter (Jada Toys)) Review
Ryu
Street Fighter (Jada Toys) (Jada Toys)Although they've been putting figures out at a slow rate, Jada's Street Fighter line has proven promising, showing off fully-posable and well-made characters for good prices, and I await the next couple of pre-orders. I covered Chun-Li a while ago, and now it's time to look at the major player of the franchise.

Ryu is designed not just after how he appears in SFII, but much of the franchise in general. He has his typical stoic expression by default, but it can be swapped out for an alternate head with a fiercer look. Most of the hair and the headband tie are a separate bit of softer material on top of the heads, with the tie flowing differently on both portraits. Both heads look nice, and the paint is pretty good, aside from some slop and bleed, including some white marks on the back of the hair of the default head.

At 6" tall, Ryu is dressed in his usual gi, which is a separate rubber layer over the torso. The gi can peg apart at the belt, so it can be removed if you want to have a topless Ryu. The clothes have some good texturing, along with defined musculature and veins on the body. The skin gets a bit of wash to make it pop more, and the edges of the gloves are clean. There is a bit of gloss to the figure, but it's barely noticeable and therefore, not a big issue. Overall, the figure looks to be pretty good mass market quality, even though he's not really mass market (you're more likely to find him online than at Target).

The articulation on Ryu is very good, and a little better than Chun-Li. The barbell head is aided by a ball-joint at the base of the neck, allowing him to look all around, and the heads swap with no issues. The arms have swivel/hinge shoulders and wrists, swivel biceps, and double-hinged elbows, as well as pectoral hinges to bring the arms further forward and back on the body. The ball chest and waist have plenty of tilt and roll, and the legs move well with ball hips, swivel thighs and shins, double-hinged knees, and swivel/hinge ankles. Some of the joints were pretty stiff at first (I needed to pop him apart at the waist to get it turning on the ball), but the more you work with him, the easier is gets to poses him. Aside from the extra head, he has a Hadoken with articulated support stand, and two pairs of hands (fists and Hadoken). Not bad for the price, but a dynamic stand for Ryu to display more of his specials would've been great.

Being a Street Fighter line, variants were inevitable, and Ryu got two. One is an SDCC/ Jada "Next Level" exclusive Evil Ryu, with a black gi and blank red eyes. This version gets more accessories as well, with three heads instead of just two, two different Hadokens, and regular and broken signs. The other variant is a regular Ryu with a blue gi and headband, along with brown gloves. This version is exclusive to some unheard of site called Paulmartstore. Never heard of it before, but people are getting this figure, so I guess they're legit.

Ryu is the only other figure I have from this line so far, and he's actually better than Chun-Li, thanks to better quality in the joints, but both are equally enjoyable. I hope Jada puts up some more pre-orders soon, so I can continue adding onto this line.
