Cliff Burton (Metallica (Super7)) Review
Cliff Burton
Metallica (Super7) (Super7)In the world of heavy metal, one of the most iconic bands is Metallica, and one of the most iconic bassists is Cliff Burton. Although his life was tragically cut short in a bus accident, his legacy lives on through the band's music… and this new action figure by Super7. Considering how long it can take for Super7 to produce their Ultimates, I was surprised this guy came out in just under a year.

The slip cover here is designed after a denim jacket, complete with various pins and a Metallica-styled "BURTON" on the front. The box underneath has a cool lightning motif, with a painting by Ed Repka on the back. There's only a single bit of tape and a tie to remove to get everything out, a definite plus here.

The likenesses on Super7's recent music figures have been quite good, and Cliff is no exception. He's got long rocker hair and a thin mustache, along with ton of paint with clean edges. The likeness reminds me of a Diamond Select figure; not super realistic-looking, but accurate to the person. In addition to the neutral portrait, he gets a shouting portrait with his hair flowing in the wind, and a rocking-out head with his hair flowing back, as if he's headbanging. All three heads look great, and work for many rocking out poses.

Standing around 7" tall, Cliff wears a denim jacket and jeans with a small hole around the right knee, but the most noteworthy aspect of his attire is his shirt, which bears the Misfits' mascot "The Fiend." Given that Super7 has worked with the Misfits plenty of times, I guess it wasn't hard to get approval to use him here. The figure seems to bear a full coat of paint all over, with very clean work and wash on the clothes. The shirt and jacket are both one piece of soft plastic layered over a torso, likely taking a cue from NECA.

The Major Rager's articulation is similar to the Super7 Lemmy I reviewed recently, with that unusual ball/ring joint S7 uses on occasion for the head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, swivel waist, thighs, and feet, and a ball chest (thanks to the top being a separate piece). He doesn't have extreme range in the joints, with not a ton of tilt in the head and chest, and the shoulders can't go all the way out. Still, it's enough to manage plenty of poses. The wrists feel weird as they do move on the hinges, but also feel a little stuck. The joints do move well enough, though.

Cliff isn't loaded with extras, but there's for here for him to do plenty, including, of course, his bass guitar. It looks just like his signature instrument, with good work on the paint (just like everything else), and the strap fits on him better than Lemmy's guitar did. He also comes with a hammer, lifted from the Kill 'Em All album cover. For interchangeable parts, he gets two extra heads like I mentioned before, but will you need to heat up the sockets to get them on, and nine hands: a pair of relaxed hands, a pair of grips, a pair of fists, a pair for playing the guitar, and a flipping-off right, a gesture I always enjoy getting with figures.

It definitely feels that Super7 is putting more effort into their music Ultimates than other ones, as Cliff is one of the couple we've gotten recently that turned out surprisingly good. Granted, there are a few issues like usual, but he's enjoyable enough to be worth the usual $55 for this line. In addition, that money is going to the "Cliff Burton Scholarship Fund," so you're getting a cool figure and supporting a good cause.
