Iggy (with Magic Wand) Super Mario (Jakks Pacific) (Jakks Pacific)It's been almost ten years since Jakks Pacific enhanced their presence in the action figure market through their partnership with Nintendo, making many of their properties into figures. Nowadays, the main focus is on the world of Mario, and it's not hard to see why, with plenty of characters and variants to make. I've mostly been getting their Sonic line, but I'm slowly getting back into their Super Mario line, and the low prices make them nigh-irresistible to get. I've been with the World of Nintendo line from day one, and as years went by, it went from a uniform packaging motif to graphics specific to the properties. The Mario figures are a traditional cardback with stock art on the front, and character bio and cross-sell on the back. It's sorta generic, but it works fine for a line meant for kids, and being a cardback means it's easy to open up. My latest acquisition from the line (as in, just got it yesterday) is the Koopaling Iggy. He has a somewhat wilder appearance than his fellow Koopalings, with blue and white irises, glasses, and tall, leafy-looking hair. The simple designs of the Mario series, combined with how they're almost always in three-dimensions, makes them easy to recreate in plastic, and Iggy is accurate to how he appears in-game. There are visible seam lines in the plastic, and he's a bit shiny, but being a mass market toy, it's no big deal. Iggy's hair brings him up to about 5" tall, and he's about in-scale with Mario (and he's often depicted as close to the same height as him). His appearance is partially based off Bowser's, down to the spiked shell and cuffs. Again, he's a simple design that was easy for the Jakks team to recreate, and matches the games perfectly. Well, almost perfectly. The paint suffers from bleed in various areas, especially in his toenails and the spikes on his cuffs, a few of which are misaligned. Even for a mass market figure, the paint could've been much better. There's both good and bad parts to the articulation. First the bad: his head doesn't move. The packaging makes it look like it does, but nope, it's a glued-in square peg. The hair turns for some reason, and I'm not sure if that's gonna do much for Iggy. On the good side is the rest of the articulation, with swivel/hinge joints for the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, and ankles, including swivels both above and below the elbow bend. The joints move well, and Jakks did a near-perfect job integrating as much articulation into him as possible. His only accessory is his magic wand, and it fits into his right hand no problem. For those who haven't gotten into Jakks' Mario line, what I've said about Iggy can apply to the figures as a whole: great sculpts, almost enough articulation for good poses, key world-building extras, and all for afforadable prices. Head movement and better paint could've made Iggy better, but I'm stilly happy with him. Guess I have to get the rest of the Koopalings now… - 3/22/24 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
