Evil REX-1 (Terminate the Turtles) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)Last year saw the arrival of REX-1, one of the most wanted characters, in NECA's TMNT cartoon line, and I assume we all knew they'd follow up with the evil clone Shredder made of him. About a year later, here it is, and much easier to find, too! The packaging stands out from the rest of the single-packed toon figures in that it's based specifically off FHE's "Sewer Heroes Series" tapes, the first to have such a style since the GITD Muckman from '22. The art, done by Aaron Hazouri in his usual cartoonier-than-the-original-series style, depicts poor Donatello at the mercy of this evil robocop, while the bio on the back is a corrupted version of good REX's bio. The exterior is great, but the interior is the problem, as there's a ton of those damn plastic ties. Why NECA is so obsessed with these, I'll never know. There's not much to say about the figure's appearance, since it's just both a retool and repaint of the basic REX-1 figure. Most of the sculpt is the same aside from a few differences, with angrier eyes, a different jaw shape, and no badges on the hat and chest. It still has the oversized feet, but that's to make the figure more stable (not to mention how inconsistent the proportions in the show could get). The colors also give off an "evil" look, with various shades of gray and a few red parts as opposed to the blues its good counterpart has. The lines and shading are clean, but there are a couple stray marks and bleed here and there. I'd say the figure looks great overall, being once again sculpted by Brodie Perkins and standing about 9" tall. Since the sculpt is mostly the same as good REX, evil REX has the same articulation, with a barbell head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and ankles, swivel biceps, waist, and thighs, hinged elbows and knees, and ball-jointed hips. The joints moved well, with no need for heat unlike the previous figure, and have good range. Be mindful of the shoulders due to how they can get a bit stuck, and you wouldn't want to damage the biceps. Also like good REX, the chest panels flip up, and the jaw is hinged to reveal a mouth slot. Unfortunately, the different shape of the slot means you can't use the tongue from good REX for it. The accessories here are a mix of what good REX had, along with some new extras. Five pairs of hands are included - closed, splayed, flat palm, gun grip, and newly-sculpted C-grips. The hands swap with ease, and there were no issues putting accessories into the grips. We get the pair of blasters again, a solid black color this time, and they can be held in REX's hands or plugged into the waist holsters. What's also new are the megaphone and two blast effects, one red and one blue. These can be used on the weapons for both figures, and can make for some cool displays. For a bad bot, evil REX is a pretty good figure, with the usual quality and dedication NECA puts into the license. The paint could be better, but that's my only real issue with the figure besides the overabundance of plastic ties. It looks as if this figure won't be too hard to come across (and more casual fans may not go for it), btu the $50 price tag may discourage army-builders. - 3/23/24 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
