Wingnut & Screwloose (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7)) Review
Wingnut & Screwloose
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) (Super7)Judging from what been's shown off recently, it seems as if Super7 is shifting away from recreating old TMNT toy designs in both Ultimate and ReAction form. I believe Playmates wanted them to dial back or stop since they're going heavy into reissues as of late, and fears people would prefer S7's offerings (despite being completely different and pricier). It's a shame, since their vintage-inspired Ultimates have been getting better and better, such as the heroic bat alien Wingnut.

Wingnut has a rather crazed expression here, with a wild-eyed stare and his tongue sticking out, but you'd be a little loopy too if you got sucked into a vortex as your home planet was being destroyed. Like usual, the Four Horsemen team provided the sculpts, properly updating the old toy designs, and Wingnut is some of the best work in the line. The paint wash and details are excellent, and there's no noticeable bleed to the paint. He includes an alternate head with a closed mouth and stern, blank eyes, and it's pretty obvious someone at Super7 couldn't resist doing a Batman reference.

Wingnut is one of the bigger figures in the line, standing about 8" tall whilst taking up quite a bit of space, mainly due to the wings. His wings are outfitted with mechanical enhancements made by Donatello, and here, these enhancements can be removed, but the right one tends to pop out of the organic wing too easily. He's lovingly detailed and painted, with clean line work and even some metallic finishes here and there, quite an upgrade over a figure from the early 90s. His utility belt has been redesigned to feature a lot more tools, ranging from a flashlight to handcuffs to even a time bomb, ensuring our batty hero has all he needs to fight crime. The belt can't be removed unlike the original toy, but would you really want to?

Prior hunchbacked designs like Bebop and Slash got pretty useful barbell-jointed heads, and so does Wingnut, but he also gets a ball-joint at the base of the neck, allowing him to look around and tilt his head in plenty of directions. Other than that, he has swivel/hinge wings, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, ball-jointed waist, and swivel thighs and tail. Most of the joints work pretty well, but there are two things to note about the legs. One is that the ankles are very tight out of the box, so you'll want to heat them up before moving them. Another thing is that I found the hips get a little loose the more you work with them, so don't get too crazy with posing them.

Adding onto the Batman-inspired head is Wingnut's very own cape, made of fabric and can be easily plugged into the shoulder pads. In usual S7 fashion, a wire is integrated inside, allowing it to flow, and you can have both it and the wings on at the same time. He still has his "bat gun", which can be plugged into the mechanical wings or held in the proper gripping hands, which can be swapped out for fists or relaxed hands. The gun gets two new attachments - a grappling hook and a radar dish - which plug in with ease, and the throwing bat is another new extra, clearly a lawyer-friendly batarang. There's also four canister grenades, calling back to the original toy's "bat bomb", and can be stored on the wings and in the belt.

You can't have Wingnut without his little buddy Screwloose, so of course he's included. No longer a hunk of solid yellow plastic, Screwloose is fully colored from head to toe, with very clean paint, and the clear wings are a nice touch. He now gets an eye mask, as to give him a Boy Wonder vibe, and stands about 3 1/2" tall. He's now articulated as well, with a ball head, swivel/hinge shoulders, and swivel wings and tail. It's not a lot, but it's enough to adjust the pose a bit.

A lot of people have praised this figure, and I can see why; he's fully painted and detailed, packed with plenty of joints and accessories, and pretty darn big as well. However, he's $75, a good deal more than the already high Ultimates price point, so your options are to either pay up now or hold out for a sale. I wouldn't hold off for too long, though, since I have a feeling this duo will be pretty popular.
