Harley Quinn (Timed Edition) (Batman (Mondo)) Review
Harley Quinn (Timed Edition)
Batman (Mondo) (Mondo)Although I haven't been keeping up with Mondo's Batman Animated line, from what I've been hearing, they're really good, and while Catwoman was the only one I had up until recently, I'm starting to get into it more. I pre-ordered Bane when the timed edition was up, and I also got Harley Quinn some time ago as well. Most fans know she was a character created for the show, and has since become an iconic villain in the franchise, so her inclusion in this line was a no-brainer.

The box is pretty simple in nature, being red all around, but Danny Haas' art on the front is great. This is a fifth-panel box with an opening flap to reveal the contents inside, and it's made out of a thick, durable cardboard. It's very easy to open up and get everything out, so there's no reason not to play with her.

Dressed in her iconic harlequin outfit, Harley's expression is pretty much her default one, bearing a mischievous grin. If that doesn't suit you, you can swap it out for a more excited look or an angry, shouting face. The timed edition adds two more heads, one has a smug, somewhat seductive smile, and the other is an unmasked Harley, with big, prominent pigtails (how she keeps those under the outfit, we'll never know) and a bubbly expression. While there's a little mark here and there, the heads bear a consistent finish and clean edges. Tomasz Rozejowski, who usually provides the paint work for Mondo figures nowadays, designed and sculpted the figure with Alex Brewer's assistance, and he's the right guy for the job, being able to bring these sleek, animated designs to three dimensions flawlessly.

Standing about 10 3/4" tall, Harley has a pretty simple outfit, colored just red, black, and white. This makes the paint job a lot easier to accomplish, with clean lines and little room for error, though I did notice some paint chipping off the midsection under the chest as I moved it, as well as a black mark on the side of the neck. There isn't as much shading here as other animated figures, but they still pulled it off in a way that it's not an eyesore. Her slender proportions are almost spot-on to the show, but her elbows are a little thicker than they should be, throwing off the appearance slightly.

Harley's articulation reminds me a bit of what a DC Collectibles figure would have, except on a larger figure… and better. She has a barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and ankles, revolver-joint wrists, ball chest and hips, swivel thighs, and double-hinged knees. Most of the joints move easily, though the left elbow was stuck tight, and heat was needed to get it moving. The joints have pretty good range, and she can manage plenty of fun poses. One thing to note about the hands is that there's five different pairs of them: gun grip (despite having no guns, no thanks to WB's iffiness over small plastic firearms), tight grip, wide grip, angled grip, and wide open. The hands swap at the forearms, rather than the hands themselves, so make sure you have a good grip on the joint, and they'll swap with no issues. Also be mindful of the ankles, as they're somewhat tight, and chances are you can cause the boots to come unglued (I had to reglue one as I was writing this review).

Extra heads and hands aren’t all Harley has, as she's loaded with great, character-appropriate extras. She has her big mallet, of course, and extra weaponry includes a jester stick and a mannequin arm, because who can forget the iconic "I'm armed" joke? There's also her "sane" certificate from the Arkham Asylum, a purse, a perfume bottle (poison perfume, to be exact), Batman's handcuffs and belt (I tried to get the latter on her, but no luck), and the usual stand with crotch support. I can't get the support fit on her properly, but she stands fine enough on her own that she doesn't really need it. The timed edition, in addition to the two extra heads, adds in her pet hyenas, Bud and Lou. Both bear different expressions, with one having their tongue hanging out, and both the sculpts and paint are excellent. Neither are articulated, but are solid hunks of plastic, and even come with a food bowl, bone, and steak, so Harley can treat her "babies."

Harley is a near-perfect figure, with great work on the sculpt and paint, along with plenty of extras, even if you're not getting the timed edition. The timed edition appealed to me more with the extra heads and hyenas, but I missed out on it when it was up. Thankfully, Mondo recently held a vault sale with previously sold-out figures, including this one, and I was more than happy to get her right then and there.
