King-Size Homer Simpsons (Super7) (Super7)Don't get me wrong, Super7 did a pretty good job with their short run with the Simpsons license, but their character selection was quite poor. Wave 1 had a decent mix of major and minor characters, and wave 2 offered a better selection, but then wave 3 was all B/C-listers, and wave 4 was an unusual mix of deep-cut characters and variants, notably giving us our second Homer variant before doing a regular one. Sheesh, no wonder Disney dropped them. At least their second Homer comes from another one of the show's best episodes, "King-Size Homer." Super7's team already nailed Homer's likeness with the "Deep Space" version, so doing him again was no difficult task here, they just had to make the lower part of his head fatter. This is accurate to the episode, as he had to pack on the pounds to work from home. Once more, they made the hairs on top of his head out of a rubbery material, reducing fears of breakage. As we saw on Ralph and Burns in the previous wave, Homer's skin isn't painted, but rather bare yellow plastic, and it feels like a step back from the first two waves. He has a neutral expression by default, but it can be swapped out for an "oooh" face or a more irate look. Normally, I don't like side-eyed figures, but it works well on the angry head, selling his annoyance better. At 7" tall, this Homer is a bit chunkier than the previous one, with thicker, stubbier arms and legs, and a prominent gut hidden underneath his muumuu. The two halves of the muumuu are sculpted separate of each other, with the lower part being a layer of a softer material covering his belly. The flower are nicely printed on and match the design from the episode, but the problem is that the flowers between the two halves of the outfit don't line up very well. The paint is the biggest flaw with him, and there's various little spots of slop and marks on him, in addition to rub-off from the collar and "fat guy" hat onto the head, and white discoloration on the back of the collar. They seem to have put in less effort into the paint and finish here than most of the line, and for a figure of this price, that's not good. Normally, being over 300 pounds would lead to mobility issues, but Homer actually moves pretty well. His head is a simple ball-joint, but the fat neck prevents it from being able to move well, with very little tilt. The shoulders and wrists are both swivel/hinges, but elbow movement is reduced to just swivels at the sleeves, though it helps add a bit of variety to arm poses. The ball chest works very well, with plenty of tilt and twist, and the ball hips and swivel/hinge ankles can achieve deeper stances just fine. There's no knee joints, but that's due to the legs being shorter and fatter than usual. Even with the more limited movement, you can get some great poses out of this figure. Being an episode-specific figure, Homer comes with some fitting accessories. The extra heads swap with little issue, and he also has six hands: two closed, two gripping, pointing right, and flat palm left. To complete the "work-at-home" look, he has the aforementioned hat, as well as a wired cloth blanket cape, both of which fit great on the figure. To do his job, Homer has a broom, with indents in the soft end so he can hold it like in the episode, and a drinking bird that tilts up and down. There's also an ice cream cone, which he can't so much hold and he can let it rest in his left gripping hand, and the medal he was awarded for preventing nuclear devastation with his girth. I feel they could've fit in a few more extras, like the clay donut and his "Give me ride or everybody dies" sign, but the latter I could just make myself out of cardboard and a Sharpie. King-Size Homer is another fun, classic look, and he'd be an amazing figure if it wasn't for the crap paint and lack of head movement. It doesn't help that he's $10 more than your usual Ultimate, which will likely drive away fans. If you can get him for a better price, jump on it, and you'll be happy with him. Still, we really should've gotten a regular Homer before another variant, and I don't think we'll be getting another 7" Simpsons line for a while. - 5/18/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
