Radioactive Man Simpsons (Jakks Pacific) (Jakks Pacific)Despite his status as a famous comic superhero in the Simpsons universe, Radioactive Man has gotten surprisingly little merchandise. He's at least gotten a plush, a Kidrobot figure, a Bearbrick, a Funko POP, and two figures of resident Schwarzenegger expy Rainer Wolfcastle dressed as him. Earlier this year, Super7 gave him his first true action figure that isn't Wolfcastle, but it turned out pretty bad. Thankfully, Jakks Pacific has come along with something both better and cheaper. Setting him apart slightly from Matt Groening's usual style is the slightly more realistic proportions of RM's face. The eyes and nose are a little smaller than average, but that's pretty much it. The little bumps on the sides of his head are supposed to be his ears, and I'm not sure how well he can hear with his costume covering them (I guess super hearing is one of his powers?). Jakks' team did a great job with the likeness, looking better than the Super7 version, and the atomic symbol on his forehead is cleanly painted, albeit not green like the box illustration. His expression also isn't a blank smile like we've seen with the basic 5" figures, showing clenched teeth in a slight grin. All the different colors seem to be separate pieces of plastic, and I guess Jakks thought that would make for a better, cleaner appearance than making the head a solid piece and painting over it. One of the main issues with Super7's Radioactive Man was how he looked, as the body didn't resemble any depiction of him on the show. Jakks' version, on the other hand, matches his comic proportions just fine, giving him a buff, muscular look. The outfit is great as well, featuring clean paint on the gloves, and I don't recall him ever wearing a watch over his left glove, but I guess if that's what the Simpsons crew and/or Disney wanted, I guess I'll go along with it. The cape is soft plastic, a smart move to prevent it from hindering any movement, specifically in the legs. RM stands about 5 3/4" tall up to the tip of the bolt on his head, and being a "premium" release, he carries a special feature; flip the switch on his back to on, press the middle of the belt, and watch the symbol on his chest pulsate red then fade out one-by-one. Yeah, it's gimmicky, but the light works great and shines bright. The articulation isn't much different than usual for Radioactive Man. He lacks a waist joint, but that's because of the light-up feature. He has all the rest though, with swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists, swivel head and biceps, ball-jointed hips and ankles, and hinged knees. It sounds like a lot, but the joints don't have enough motion to suit a superhero like him. The head should really be a ball-joint, and more range in the ankles is much needed. At least you don't have to worry about any loose joints or anything falling off unlike the Super7 figure. The light-up chest isn't the only "premium" thing here, as Radioactive Man also has a diorama base, recreating the cover of the first issue, featuring the hero's origin. The base scales about 4 3/4" long, 6“ tall, and 4" wide, and makes use of a lot of stickers, all perfectly applied. There's some depth to the details as well, with the mushroom cloud and text rising off the background, and it makes for a pretty good look. In addition to a foot peg on the base, there's also a dynamic posing arm that plugs into the back, with a clamp to hold the figure and hinges on both ends. It allows you to depict our hero flying, even if the articulation isn't enough to get a really dynamic pose. After the letdown that was Super7's Radioactive Man, Jakks Pacific helped redeem the man with a much better design, a lower price, and plenty of neat additions. Best part? He's scaled to fit with the Playmates line, and since the only RM they did was the Wolfcastle one, having the real deal with go great on the "Lunar Base," The Android's Dungeon, or wherever else you feel like putting him. If Jakks can put out more characters Playmates didn't do (like Furious Homer), that will be a huge plus to collectors of the old line. Now go on, Jakks, up and atom! - 9/3/24 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
