Matte Finish over Acrylic Gloss

Posted in Custom Workstation

Hey I am working on a custom bootleg shf vegeta repaint and used gloss paint by accident. Im wondering if using a Matte finisher like Mod Podge will still de-gloss the fig enough?

Testors Dullcote is overpriced for what it is, if you want to save some money in the long run, get some Liquitex Acrylic Varnish or even Krylon's matte sealer.

The Liquitex is brush on, so you have the advantage of placing it exactly where you need it, and you waste way less of it. http://www.figurerealm.com/topic?topicid=9368

Krylon's is a spray like Dullcote with similar results, except you get like 4 TIMES AS MUCH in the can.

So, have you ever had any issues with the Krylon sealer taking a LONG time to dry, or not being compatible with certain plastics? I had bought a can a few years ago when I first started and for the life of me cannot remember if I used any on a figure or tested it on a "throwaway" part, but do know I avoided it after reading on the forum here about regular spray paint such as Krylon and Rustoleum not playing nice with the soft plastics.

I remember it being sticky on some older '90s figures when sprayed directly onto the plastic. But sometimes it was also just fine. It was usually fine on more modern figures through I never got the chance to spray on soft things like capes. I stick to the brush-on sealer now since it offers the same level of "protection" and don't have any bad experiences with it yet.

I wish there were a chemist around to give us definitive answers to why stuff works/doesn't work.

I may try it out on a test piece since I still have the can. I had thought that with a few layers of paint it might not be an issue, although, yeah, I'd probably avoid using it on rubbery capes, belts, etc. Funny you've settled on the Liquitex acrylic varnish, the very first piece I ever painted I used artist's acrylic paint (Winsor Newton if I remember correctly) since that was all I had available. Thinned down and applied in layers it has held up surprisingly well the last four years.

My experience is that the Tamiya flat clear spray does an even better job than the Dulcote. It is more expensive, but I've found the Testor's over a gloss will still leave a shine, so you end up with more of a satin finish
