Hasbro Star Wars 6-Inch a Reality – Announces Black Series on USAToday.com

Yes, the rumors of 6-inch Star Wars figures are true, and it looks like Hasbro has given the nod to Gentle Giant.
I thought we would have to wait for Toy Fair in a couple of weeks for confirmation, but Hasbro announced the Star Wars Black Series on USAToday.com. While the article says that the line will focus on the original trilogy, the first wave of four figures will include Episode 1 baddie, Darth Maul. Rounding out the first wave due in August are X-Wing Luke (shown at the right), R2-D2, and an Imperial Sandtrooper, with a planned retail price of $19.99 each. Hasbro is planning a second wave of four figures before the end of the year.
Although Hasbro referenced Marvel Legends, it does not look like the Black Series will incorporate the Build-A-Figure concept. Could you imagine a 6-inch scaled Rancor?
I’m sure there will be lots more questions, but at top of mind for me right now are these two. First, with the line launching so close to San Diego Comic-Con, will we see an SDCC exclusive to really kick this line off? And second, Hasbro always announces a huge vehicle at Toy Fair – could it be something in the 6-inch scale this time around?

New toys are on a bigger scale and will focus on characters from the original movie trilogy.
After 35 years of fantastic plastic standing tall in pop culture at 3¾ inches, Hasbro is releasing the Star Wars Black Series this year, beginning a new set of 6-inch figures that will feature more articulation and an increased attention to detail.
Priced at $19.99 each, eight figures are planned for 2013 — Hasbro will primarily draw characters from the original Star Wars trilogy of films while also bringing in key players from the prequels.
The first wave of four, due out in early to mid-August, includes Luke Skywalker in his X-Wing Fighter flight suit, fan-favorite droid R2-D2, bad guy Darth Maul and an Imperial Sandtrooper.
“We consider them the best figures that Hasbro’s ever produced for Star Wars that meets the sensibilities of romancing the character as well as the playability and poseability that fans really appreciate,” says Derryl DePriest, Hasbro vice president of boys marketing.
Hasbro has had success with the scale before with the 6-inch Marvel Legends figures based on Marvel Comics heroes and villains. In terms of Star Wars, though, the Black Series will act as a transitional point between the 3¾-inch toys — “which is rooted in the childhood memories of generations of now-grown kids,” DePriest says — and the 12-inch Sideshow Collectibles figures for adult collectors.
The current “vintage”-style line of 3¾ figures will also continue under the Black Series banner.

In creating something new and different with Star Wars, the color black became an inspiration for toy designers, DePriest says. “It’s one of the main colors of Star Wars all the way back to the beginning, and it’s the approach that Lucasfilm has taken with their collector-oriented product line. We’re bringing that simplicity and essence and focus on the character now to the toy aisle.”
The Black Series appeals to those newbies who want to start a series from the start as well as those hardcore collectors who gobble up anything having to do with the words “Jedi” or “Empire” and “are looking for something new and their interest isn’t as piqued by the 15th cantina alien we have yet to do,” DePriest says. “We realize folks want their iconic characters delivered up in a new way.”
With Star Wars: Episode VII coming from new Star Wars director J.J. Abrams in a couple of years, as well as comics, novels and other media adding to the universe George Lucas started in 1977, it’s a good time to figure out different scales and toys for the next generation of Star Wars fan, according to DePriest.
Before then, however, the Black Series also gives a chance for parents to connect with their own little Star Wars fans.
“Our focus here is the adult collector, the dad,” DePriest says. “We know they have their own generation of youngsters they like to share the adventure with. It can be something for dad, and the 3¾ world can be something for the kids to share.”

I'm looking to get a fourth Sandtrooper and then save up for wave 2. Wave 3 will be expensive with Stormtroopers. I'll have to piclk up at least four of those and then two more to customize with Han and Luke heads. I see some people are making Jedi Luke figures with the Darth body. I would, but I expect them to make that figure, hopefully in a wave with Vader, Emperor and wither Ewoks or Imperial Guards. Not that I don't expect Stormtrooper Han and Luke figures to be released, I just don't know how much different they will be outside of paint apps and accessories. Those are also two of my favorite costumes in the movies.
Here's two discussion stating the differences

Also, my vote is for Sandtrooper! Its probably just because he has no face, but he is almost good enough to pass for real with good camera tricks.
Yeah, I think they would be if they made them. Like you said, the accessories made already are top notch, plus, just look at the 3 3/4 figures' force effects. They were awesome! I'm sure they'd be the same if not better!
Yeah, I hear you. The face sculpt on Maul is spot on though. The sculpt and paint on the rest of the figure is also amazing. I think Maul could also looks quite lifelike if you were to photograph him and photoshop the shine from the plastic. But, again, the Sandtrooper is basically the same. That paint, that sculpt, those accessories, man it's great! So, that's my reasoning for why it's a tie.

they had an R2 and a Maul at my store, but I passed on them for now. I was even gonna pass on Luke temporarily, but my girlfriend decided to surprise me!
I wish they had been in 7" scale to go with my other figures, but I'm not gonna complain. this series was completely out of the blue for me, and they blow the 3" figures out of the water.
The Luke head sculpt isn't perfect, but it is dang close. I'm looking forward to seeing what fan-repaints can do with them.
The Sandtrooper is my fave so far though. It just looks awesome, and comes with a pike of weapons. I'm really tempted to pick up two more and get a little squad going, haha.
Haha! I know right! I love the little guys! They were such a great a great inclusion. I was fortunate to find a vintage collection Wicket a couple years back and it's one heck of a figure. I'm looking forward to how they'll do on a black series version. Haha, no judgement here!
Caboose
I'm eager to get into this line but I'm undecided how to start. I like the looks of that X-Wing Luke more than I thought I would, though in my mind his Bespin/Dagobah look has always been the most iconic (probably because Empire is my favorite movie) so I wonder if I should just wait for that one? I definitely don't want more than one version of each character...
Which is what makes me wonder if I should pick up Boba Fett when he is first released at retail or wait for the inevitable ROTJ repaint, as the latter is my favorite version though the waiting may get to me.
Decisions, decisions. Either way, I'm glad they're doing a 6" line.
Yeah plus all the new modling really makes these things stand out. If R2 had lights or lights and sounds I would have been fine with the price buuuut Im a bit of a hypocrite cause when Yoda comes out I will GLADLY pay the cost for him
Yeah, you and everybody else
Anybody have one? I hear they are really nice.

Where did you hear this? No offense but you tend to believe everything. Heck you believed that disney was buying hasbro and you posted that AFTER it had been confirmed false.
I mean I don't care either way because Im at disneyland once a week and I know where about 10 disney stores within 20 mi utes of me are. Not only that but my mom is best friends with the manager of the closest Disney store
But yeah until anything is confirmed I wouldn't panic just yet.
These will be the first toy line I ever pre-order. Being a Marvel Legends fan/collector, I have high hopes for these. Also looks like I'm going to have to make space to store the packaging. I don't save anything that is more intended to be ripped open a la Marvel Legends.
So many possibilites with this line. Variants. BAF, BAVehicle, Alternate/swapable pieces. Can also finally got some dope 6 inch scale Sci-Fi accessories to use with other figures or customs.
SDCC Exclusive = Head 'splode, people be bankrupt.
