Dragon Flyz on the shelves again...

Posted in Action Figure Chatter

Ok, so I wandered into a Walmart earlier today, first time I've been there in about 6 months. First time I've been down a toy aisle since probably October or November. Anyway I saw that they're making Dragon Flyz again, I had a momentary glimpse of excitement until I got closer.

If you don't remember the original Dragon Flyz here's a pic of one:

See the nice lil Dragon launcher down at the bottem of the box there? Yeah I do as well and that's about the only thing I liked about this line. Simply because I like Dragons and these were some interesting renditions. So now you can understand my excitement when I thought they were making them again.

This however is what the new ones look like:

Do you see the dragon there? I sure don't, and I flipped it every which way but open looking for anything that even remotely resembled a dragon...no such luck...

Now the part that kills me is how can you call them Dragon Flyz when there isn't even the slightest bit of a dragonish look to it? Long story short I probably won't be in another toy aisle for another 2 or 3 months

I saw some Dragon Flyz at KBtoys the other day and they came will full sized dragons. They looked better than the originals.

Isn't the general reaction to MOVE if a flying object is coming at you? I love how some things get recalled due to common sense issues.

Hah, I saw some little girls, looked around 6 or 7 years-old, playing with some Sky Dancers. They weren't taking each other's eyes out with the things. How dumb do you have to be to not realize getting hit in the eye is going to hurt? That's one of the first things you learn in life, stuff in your eye hurts!

Dragon Flyz first hit the shelves in '96 along with Sky Dancers by Galoob. Who is, as of '98 I believe now owned by Hasbro. In 2000 there was a recall on Sky Dancers due to over a hundred reported injuries. A lot of people group Dragon Flyz in with that recall but actually as far as I know Dragon Flyz specifically were never recalled. It was all on the Sky Dancers. Possibly a reason girls should stay away from "action figures" and stick to dolls? Anyway there was never any cartoon series but instead just a direct to market movie as far as I know, released the same time as the toys along with a bunch of books and stuff.

So from '96 to '00 Sky Dancers and Dragon Flyz were a big hit, made Galoob a good chunk of change and then Hasbro for a few years until they had to start refunding on them due to the recall. Well obviously Hasbro just up and decided it was more trouble then it was worth and gave up the license for both. Now the new Sky Dancers and Dragon Flyz are being made by Play Along. The same company that does Care Bears, Cabbage Patch Kids and I think they have the Trolls line as well. I didn't pay horribly close attention but I think the names of the 4 new figures were the same as previously released figures.

Basically they didn't change a thing as far as the general function of the toys go. The winged part is now attached to a backpack of sorts that clips on to the figure and then you launch it but it's still the same foam wings that caused eye damage 6 years ago. Let's see how long they get to run with this before they get hit with a recall as well

Those are some cool comparisons. I sure don't remember the original Dragon Flyz, but they look very interesting. I would have thought they were some kind of Sectaur if I didn't see them in the package.

Yea, the new guy looks pretty lame and I sure don't see a dragon. He looks like a scrawny Power Ranger or something. Are the characters even the same at all? Or is it a completely different line under the same name?
