Nope, it was the project that DC allowed Kirby to do when he left Marvel to work for DC in the early 70's. He had full control over it and I think he was allowed some form of partial copyright ownership. I think he started the concept / storyline in "Superman's Pal: Jimmy Olsen" and then "The Forever People"," Mr Miracle" and "New Gods". All those titles centered around the war between New Genesis & Apokolips and Kirby gave DC their biggest, baddest meanie - Darkseid.
After those books were cancelled Kirby went on to create "The Demon", "Kamandi" and the original "OMAC" for DC.
