Matty Collector Watchmen Figures, Discussion and Pics.

Posted in Action Figure Chatter

Just went ahead and bit the bullet on the first figure in the new Matty Collector Watchmen line. $37.26 after tax and the cheapest shipping. Hopefully it's worth it. Going to be a bit pricey to get all six figures. I haven't started collecting DCUC yet and I don't collect MotU, so this will be my first Mattel figure. I recently picked up their flight stands and I like the build to them. Not the best for posing, but very sturdy. The Watchmen figures look good in the few videos I've seen posted and I think the packaging looks great.

I did not buy the sub and just waited to see if there would be any made available to the public. I do plan on picking up each figure and will resort to eBay or the community if I miss a figure. Not sure what the real reason to pay for a sub is, except the fact I am guaranteed a figure and early access? There should either be a discount or some type of exclusive figure/base/background pieces for sub members. I would have picked one up if it came with a build-able street corner and a non articulated kid reading a comic and a newspaper vendor. Hell for that, I would have purchased two.

Also, anyone know of a good site to help me get started on my DCUC collecting? I'm looking for a site like MarvelLegends.net that lists each series and has detailed pics. Makes it easier to cherry pick what I'm after. Thanks in advance

I wonder how Alan Moore Feels about these figures?

Just a heads up that starting April 15th and running until the 30th, Mattel will be opening up Club Subscriptions for the rest of the year to those that missed out. I will be signing up for the rest of the Watchmen figures. Saw the news on Toyark.

Yeah, I just opened up mine today and it's the same issue. I was expecting it since I read your post beforehand. I'm going to browse the Matty Collector forums to see what others are saying about it. Do you think it was an attempt at shading or one of those non matching paint/plastic issues? I see that a lot with Hasbro Marvel Legends. After the great shading on Rorschach, this is a little of a let down. Especially for almost forty bucks.

Outside of the different shades of blue, I really like the figure. The mouth sculpt/chin is odd because it is a little crooked. Overall I think the figure has a nice clean and simple look to it.

So...got my Dr. Manhattan today... I am sorely disappointed. Most his blues are different shades of blue! What the heck!

I feel you man. It's pricey, but I can't help myself either. Oddly, I'm looking forward to displaying all the packaging. I think they knocked that aspect out of the park. On another site someone commented that he should have came with maybe a glass castle or I was thinking a working hourglass, a watch, some clear energy blasts, a suit or even a flight stand. Any of those would have been nice. So far, the Comedian seems to be the only one that comes with more than one accessory.

I can't wait to see the Ozymandias sculpt. I'm not sure how I feel about the Silk Spectre. I don't have any Mattel female figures, so I have nothing to go off of. I'm diggin' the Nite Owl. Has some issues, but I think it will be nice in hand.

Have you heard anything about what possible subs will be offered for next year? If not, when do they typically release that info? I'm new that the whole thing. Is there any advantage to having a sub outside of early access and a guaranteed figure?

I have a club infinite earts subscription and because I do my figures are 2$ cheaper then on release date. I don't know if the same is true for the watchmen sup. We don't learn about next years subs until SDCC. I think Dr. M should come with an interchangable crotch so I could make him nude!!!

Just finished ordering my Dr. Manhattan. 38$ seems a little steep considering he really has little to no sculpted details and no accessories but maaaaan its gunna be NICE having them all together

Don't forget, Doctor Manhattan, as well as what's still available from the other lines, go on sale today. 9 a.m. PT/12 p.m. ET. As long as I can snag one, I'll post some pics when I get it.

It would also be cool if he came with some of Dan Drieburg's refrigerated beans!

Packaging is very nice. Helps to justify price. Also has a oversized Bio/Trading Card that I left taped inside the package. I'd like to be able to find the room to display all six of the boxes.

The figure is very clean and looks nice. The pin stripes and shoes/coat are very impressive. The coat and shoes look very good in person. Nice job on shading. The base is sleek. I do have a few issues. The figure is limited when it comes to posing. The gun is way too big. My super nerd complaint is that the bottom of the shoes don't have any details. It would have been a nice nod to the comics if there were wear holes in the bottom of the shoes. I remember when Rorschach is arrested in the graphic novel, there is a panel showing holes in his socks and shoes. But that's a super nerd complaint. Also, the head does not move up and down and makes the face look very flat. It would have been cool if the hands could be put into the pockets of the jacket or if it came with an alternate head or a diary. I'd even settle for sugar cubes

Size comparison with the only other DCUC figure I have, New 52 Batman Unlimited. I like that figure also. I guess these two figures have gotten me into collecting DCUC.

Just to show how oversized the gas powered grappling gun is. The thing is the same size as the version used in the movie bust next to it.

Got mine today and I have to say I must agree. I only have a few minor complaints. Biggest one is his "shotgun"
I also don't like that he can't look up. Biggest reason why his face looks smashed.

I'm impressed and I recommended him. Better in person than in pics. The packaging is dope. I will be posting some pics and thoughts this weekend. I'm more excited about the rest of the line now.

Yeah, I had the initial feelings that it would be pretty damn hard to get like shapp. I didn't know about the subs, so I missed out on those. I was pretty sure the figures would be gone before they even hit the public availability phase. To my surprise, they were still available around five pm eastern time. It wasn't even the first figure released that day by Matty to sell out. They sold out shortly after that I believe. I had to pull the trigger once it said "Almost Gone" next to the figure in red on the ordering page. They got me. So not the easiest figure to get, but if you set a little time aside the day of the release, shouldn't be a problem. I figured the same as Therapaist that he should have been the hardest to get. So, the rest should be available. A complete one just sold on eBay for 38.99 + 7.99 shipping.

I think the Nite Owl will be another one that will sell out quick. Such a dope looking sculpt. I'm sure the Comedian will be pretty popular too. I wonder if it's possible these would see a re-issue or box set? Maybe that question has already been asked or answered?

Well actually Rorschach lasted over 24 hours so he wasn't hard to get at all and if he wasn't hard to get I don't think any of them will be

You had to sign up for the Club Black Freighter (I think that's what it's called) through mattel. every other month they would send you one of the 6 figures in the wave, it totaled somwhere around $240 for the set. I believe you can purchase them from the website single the day they release but they sell out so fast it can be rather hard to do. I'm sure some will hit ebay for inflated prices if you really need one. Also, the DC Direct (I think thats what they were) will probably be going cheap once these come out as people will want to replace.

online exclusive sadly

Okay, lets say a comic store bought a couple Rorschachs online and sold them in stores for $40, I guess that would be possible...

In order to purchase Rorschach and Dr. Manhatten, does one have to be a member of a certain club, and if so, how does one become apart???

Are those DCU Rorschachs hitting speciality stores or are they Online exclusives?

I would be alright doing it if it were $20 per figure, just can't bring myself to spend $40 for a standard size DCUC type fig. I know a lot of people do but I just havent gotten to that point yet

Its really not that bad if you consider its only 40$ every two months. Put up 20$ a month and heck you have enough plus a tiny bit of pocket change

I would love to have them but I just can't spend that type of money on 6 figures. I would probably have to end up living on my couch my GF would be so pissed lol.

I subscribed to club infinite earths and decided to also take the plunge and pick up the Watchmen figures, I really hope they are worth it because when all is said and done they will be close to 240 for the 6 awful pricey but what I figured is what the heck I don't have many figures Im looking for right now might as well pick them up.
