Posted in Custom Workstation

Currently I'm working on an Inhumanoid's diorama featuring a custom Granok. Granok is pretty much finished and I created a special sceptre for him. The first few pics are of him and the sceptre at my workstation (the floor). Though I've painted miniatures for years this is my first custom toy. Found him in an old trunk of mine and decided he needed an update. The eyes always fascinated me as a child so I knew from the beginning they were going to be lit. I've learned a lot in a short time and realize there is still much more to learn.

A few notes to the custom. He now has an LED to light his eyes through his neck that way I could paint over the light receptor on his head. There's a switch on his back and the batteries are accesible though I still have to make a cover. The circuit is done nicely and I cut the battery compartment from a dollar store book light to give the circuit a more professional look.

I sculpted in the old slits that were used to transform him. The paint used was from the Reaper line of paints. I used the 3 tones of Silver as well as a wash of Rainy Grey to mute the shininess just a little.

The sceptre is a custom sculpt that I'm toying with. The base is made to look like a pile of rocks he's resting it on. This was done because my original idea was to place a battery compartment in there and run wires up the staff to light the quartz from below. Might still do that but the backside of the quartz is painted with Reaper's Sparkling Amythest. More than likely if I light the display I will clean the paint off the crystal.

Currently I am toying with making him a crown. I am just not seeing it though so might drop the idea. Next weekend I'll be starting the diorama. I've already selected the stones I want to use just gotta set up the base.

Thank you so much man. I'll give that a shot with my next fig. I've got a huge amount of Super Powers figs and want to do several modern redecos. I'm wanting to do a white lantern Hawkman and Hal Jordan sometime as well as a Green Lantern Batman.

I don't know about the superpowers line specifically but when I want to open up a figure very cleanly without drilling it I cut along the mold line with an exacto blade until you get all the way through, it's a very time consuming process but when your done you'd never know anyone had opened the figure up. As for the yellow paint I suggest paining all the yellow area's before you paint the black, because it's much easier to put black over yellow then yellow over black.

Here's a quick pic of the Sinestro Corps. Batman I've been working on. I have to admit to being a little discouraged after finding out the paint bled through the tape I applied. So after much sanding, I'm about the reapply the yellow free hand. I have the arm band painted but still have to paint the shoulders. Someone who has customized the Super Powers line please chime in with tips on opening the body with minimal damage. They just used to much glue to seal these figures. I spent the first few nights sanding the old glue from the seams to give the fig a smoother look.

I don't recognize the black cape. Was it from the Toy Biz line? I'm not very familiar with the Toy Biz line of DC figures. The cape came with a huge lot of Super Powers I recently purchased.
If anyone has a loose DCUC Sinestro Corps Batman, can you send me pics of the back?

Thanks Red and Terryzom. I'm hung up on how I want to do her arms. I got the Ultron in for parts but decided I would rather keep a level of feminity to this piece that would be lost in the conversion. I'm working on a Super Powers Batman while I decide on how I want to accessorize her arms and legs. When Kitty is done she will be a Sandra Shore fig to go with my Inhumanoids.

The Batman I mentioned is going to be a repaint with limited alteration. I'm working on making him a Sinestro Corps. member. I've got a few layers of Gloss black laquer down now. The time consuming part is the sanding then reapplying. This is the first time I'm using laquer on a fig and think it might be the last for a time. I love the control I'm used to with acrylics but I can't deny I love how lacquer lays against the fig. No brush strokes at all, but if I'm not careful it bubbles. The worst spots for it to bubble are in the grooves especially at his neck and head. If I do use lacquer I will probably use it for a base and spray with rattle can. Need a compressor before I start thinking about air brushing but that would be wonderful.

They applied so much glue to the Super Powers line that I couldn't figure out how to open him up without too much damage. I tried heating him up to loosen the glue then I tried boiling him. Nothing seemed to give. If I could have gotten him apart it would have made painting much simpler. What I did do was to dremel his belt until the area in front was flush with his abdomen just like in the produced Sinestro Corps. Batman. Also sanded down the pouches and such along the belt until it was flat. Because the access glue from production had bled out I sanded all the grooves until they were flush. I'll get pics up as soon as I get a coat of yellow down. I'm going with an acrylic Chromatic Yellow. Here's crossing my fingers that the yellow will be what I expected.

From what I read the way I can layer different paints is first lay down lacquer, then any enamels, then acrylic.

If anyone has 3 3/4 or 4 inch line green lantern accessories they want to trade let me know. I'll start posting pics for my trade thread today.

The MU Ultron arrived but looks like I'm going to sculpt Kitty's arms instead. While I was waiting on Ultron I started lacquering a Super Powers Batman and picked up this small collection for my fodder bin.

I hinted at this one in an earlier post. Can anyone guess who it's going to be? It's not the hair I want for the project but it actually rests perfectly against the armor. Was there really a Belova, Black Widow released for MU line? I can't find it on ebay and I've seen most chase figures but have never caught up with that one. I would love to use the hair from the Belova Black Widow or Classic Carol Danvers. Also, anyone know what I cut the armor from?

The hair sits so snuggly against the armor that I haven't had to glue the two pieces back together.

I want to find an MU Ultron for the arms and legs. I cut the original pelvis too short and went out and bought another copy of the source. Not much of a problem as its line is clearanced, but I did have to hit up three Walmarts until I found it. Thanks to the tutorials on this site I was able to remove the legs and split Kitty's pelvis with almost no damage. The pelvis was thickly glued though and gave me a hard time.

Here's something I've started to let a few ideas ferment. At this point I've cut out the visor. A new visor will light with a soft blue glow. I want to articulate the ankles and replace the shoulder joints and claws.

Thanks guys. The eyes turned out better than I thought they would. I'll take picks earlier in the process for the next two. One I want to paint golden then texture with sand, the other I'm hunting quartz points for protruding spikes. My thought is to paint the hidden side of the quartz with a clear red to make all the points light up menacingly. I'm hung up on what to do with the eyes on that one as it would be nice to match. One option is for me to make a cast of the head. If anyone had experience with this form of hard plastic please let me know how you would open the torso. The finest dremel cutter left a big enough scar that I had to do plenty of sculpting on the sides. I've a jeweler's saw I'm going to try out.

I also plan to vary the heads a little. The idea for the quartz one is that he's a berzerker similiar to the Hulk. What I wanted from the beginning is Red Hulk BAF left and right arm to sculpt over but that is cost prohibitive. Feel free to let me know any tips I might overlook, sage advice, constructive criticism or ideas on parts.

Thank you. I just pulled the crown out of the pot and am getting the paints ready. I'm so excited to share photos.

June 5th update: I'll try again to post pictures later but I am excited to say my MU Psylocke arrived today. I love the blue paint they used on it but don't like the application so she might be opened soon. Currently I'm trying to get an ML Spiral so that I can make a Kali figure. And MU Kitty Pryde is waiting for the sculpey. I've a surprise fig in mind just deciding on whether to commit to vintage original of the piece in mind or to give her an update and then to what extent.

June 6th update: Sorry for being a board hog, I've been trying hard to get my post count up enough to post pics. I'll do more work on the project over the weekend.
