Introduction and WIPS *Big update! Almost complete! 11/14/14

Posted in Custom Workstation

Hello! I've been a lurker on multiple forums for years, but I've finally decided to join the community! I've have a tendency to start (but never finish) customs, so I figured I needed some accountability

I have a bunch of projects on the slate, but the one I'm most driven to finish is a venom/punished snake from MGSV the phantom pain.

I'm a bit of perfectionist, so that's why I tend not to finish, but I'm feeling more excited and driven than ever to start completing some figures and showing off (and discovering) what I'm capable of!

The base is a marvel select the wolverine figure. The likeness, build, and pants are a pretty spot on and will only need slight modifications. The pony tail and eyepatch are just approximations to get an overall vision of the finished product.

Comments and questions are welcome!

Kept you waiting, huh?

Big boss is almost done! I've blocked in the color in on the jumpsuit, sculpted and painted his mechanical arm (still some fine tuning to do), and added some dry brushing to the hair! I just have to finish sculpting the knee pad, his horn, and ponytail, and go a little lighter all over on the jump suit. Then assemble the webbing and pouches. In the interest of getting it done, I might not attempt the tiger stripe at this stage. Enjoy the photos, and sorry about the delay

That sounds simple enough! And if it looks awful, then I can just paint over it!

Tiger Stripe is one of the generally easier camos to paint. Basically you do a base coat of the olive drab of your choice. Follow this with light striping of khaki, brown, or tan. Then, with a slightly thinner brush than what you chose for the shade of brown you used, do a loose stripe of black on top of the tan, that was you have black stripes with a tan or khaki outline. Follow this with a nice dark wash to lift the sculpts details over the camo again.

Thank you! I'm leaning more towards olive drab, because I've never painted camouflage before and I don't want to screw it up, but I might try tiger stripe, because that's mostly what's been showcased in all the trailers. I've been thinking about how I would paint the tiger stripe camo if I where to try.

I'm really glad/grateful for all of the interest you guys have expressed in my work! It's very encouraging! Thank you all!

Hair sculpted and face paint test! Just one coat to see how the sculpt looks and to see if the brown works. It's coming together really nicely. Right now I'm just fine tuning/ finalizing the strap placements and removing bulk from the sculpt to make sure the straps lay flush before I fully paint and assemble him. Oh and I gotta sculpt the robot arm and finish the pony. I've also thought about making a swappable mullet ( I still want to use the head for a ground zeroes sneaking suit)

As always, share any thoughts and stuff! Thanks for looking!

Finally! Another update! I had time and energy today ( it cooled down a lot) and I got a good bulk of the sculpting done, and it scrubbed the figure done with dish soap, and then rubbing alcohol to prep it for painting when the time comes. So today I did the beard, jumpsuit, and the newest (and the most accurate) robot hand, as well as the eye patch and some details on the gloved hand as well! I kept the torso pretty basic because it's mostly covered up by straps and pouches. Take a look and let me know any feed back. Thanks for looking!

That's good to know! Thanks for the heads up red rebel! My new hand already kinda broke there is a small crack in the plastic near the thumb, that makes the thumb and index finger really loose it was looking so good too! My friend gave me a replacement, but I'm excited to know I can get just the hands instead of dropping another 50-70$ for a new gundam!

CastingCave is guaranteed quality! I will say that you can buy revoltech joints in bulk on eBay. The gundam hands can be purchased separately at Hobbylinkjapan.

I've actually been thinking about getting some more of those in a variety of colors to replace joints with. I have some black ones but I might hit up the casting cave....

Another small update!

New robot hand! From a new gundam modal kit I stumbled across at Barnes and noble of all places. Is it crazy that I'll buy a model kit for $70, just for the hand? Maybe.... But it looks pretty good! What's crazier is that I'm tempted to by another (endless waltz wing zero) because it *might* be better.... My lack of motivation to sculpt has cost me a small fortune, but I think it'll all pay off in the end. It's kind of fun hunting for the best possible pieces from already existing sources. as always, share your thoughts and ask your questions!

I don't think so. I'm curious about either using spidey as the base and doing some heavy sculpting, or Frankensteining something together. I have some legs from that Dutch figure that could work for solid or liquid, but I really want to try and match the in game models as much as possible. Same with venom snake here. I've also been curious about picking up the wwe figs for their knee and elbow pads. Also on the docket is a batman year 100 (based on the art of Paul pope) figure in 7" scale. For that I'm using a Japanese "movie realization " Spider-Man by bandai. It came as a 2pack. The proportions are perfect, and so are the winter soldiers boots, though the feet will need some work. I started it at least 6 months- 1year ago, but it will be in the same vein as the new TDKR batman figures that mezco is putting out. The body suit will be fabric ( but probably not one piece) with the rest of the details sculpted. It will be pretty sweet, if I ever actually get it done

are you going to use marvel select movie hawkeye for Solid Snake?

"Production" has slowed down a bit, due to how hot it's been in work space, which is on the 2nd floor of my apartment. It's been awful. But since I'm on a metal gear kick, I discovered that diamond select amazing Spider-Man 2 with the Peter Parker head (Disney store exclusive) has a surprisingly close likeness to solid and liquid snake from the original mgs artwork mixed with the twin snakes rendering. It'll need some paint to age him a little and bring out the contours of his face, but it's pretty darn close! I guess those will be next in line.

I like the shoulder pieces a lot.
you could just do some minor sculpting on the bottom part of the torso joint and just glue the collor of the jacket on.
I think the straps will help in hiding the inconsistencies and torso joint.
I remember seeing a Mattel wrestling fig that has a combat vest similar to venom snake's.

Small update!

Went to TRU after work today to see what I could find. I Was looking for straps (because big boss is covered in them) but I found an armored kick @$$ and hit girl for $10 a piece. I figured I could use them in some way for another custom. When I started removing the armor from KA I realized arm guards were PERFECT for big boss. He also had some great straps on both sides of his armored chest plate, which look on point for the straps across big boss's chest.

Also, I'm considering making the top clothing out of vinyl and transplanting the collar onto it. It kind of bugs me how many folds are up top compared to the bottom, it just seams inconsistent since it's supposed to be the same material ( my perfectionist /OCD nature showing through). This will also free up the articulation in the arms so he can more naturally aim his weapons.

But for now, it just looks so cool to see it all coming together! As always, let me know what you think!

Time for an update! As per recommendation of the real question, I ordered a jungle extraction Dutch, which arrived in the mail today! I got straight to work, and removed the hands, belt and shirt.

I had to make wolverines wrist a little slimmer to get the glove on the hand, but the ball peg basically fits like a glove after that I pulled Dutch apart to utilize his shirt and belt so that I'll have as little sculpting as possible. I'm a decent sculptor, but why do it when you might not have to! Unfortunately I had to slice one side open to get it on wolverines body (couldn't pop his arms off, he's built pretty sturdy, and solid all the way through), but I'll be heavily modifying it so it doesn't matter too much. My goal is to retain the range of motion on all of the articulation (and even increase it if possible).

As always, questions and suggestions are welcome and encouraged! Also, should I be posting pictures this big, or should I try posting links instead?

you might be better off sculpting his teeny tiny mullet tail.

check out the casting cave sometimes they have a cast of a custom 1911 that would suit the boss.

Thanks the real question! I'll have to find me a Dutch! And as for the pony tail, it's just a place holder I just wanted to see what it would look like, and I had a spare laying around. Same with the eyepatch.

the neca dutch figure with the jacket has accurate gloves for Venom Snake.

Also the ponytail should be much smaller.

But overall I really like where you are going.
