Doing a mod to my Hawkeye

Posted in Custom Workstation

I was working on modding my ML Hawkeye tonight and I learned a couple things tonight

1. glue tightening doesn't work in the upper chest joint and it makes a mess

2. vice grips work great for safely and easily getting the pins back into the knee joints

3. I need to not get the water into a roiling boil because my stove top is very very hot and it faded the dark purple color on the hard plastic part of Hawkeye's chest and stomach (oh well it will give me more painting practice)

4. if you need to pull just part of a figure off, say like their lower legs, no need to submerge the whole figure in hot water - just the part you need to remove - will save you from possible paint fade.

but now I have a Hawkeye with feet (and boot cuffs) big enough to support him and probably get the female ML figures giving a second look.

Toybiz has that habit of getting a little of the ball when it makes figures...thats why customizers exist!!!

I just gotta figure out how to get into the chest.

I've been looking up some pics of old Hawky and I realised he don't have any brown in his costume at all! meanwhile someone at ToyBiz decided the Hawky ML figure should be loaded with it! Hawkeye is supposed to be dark purple and dark blue / black. I think I'm going to end up repainting everything from under his little bib on down and also the brown thingees on his biceps.

...or you could just stick some sculpey in the chest-joint to gum it up...or use gum!

It's not really that similar to Punisher's because his abdominal joints fit together much more closely. I suggest you try heating up his shoulder and chest in water and pull the arm until the little part the pulls out of chest cavity gives way. Then you can try prying him apart at this hole. If you know it's going to break by trying to pry, you may be able to still apply something through the new hole. The just reheat and push it back it if you don't break it apart.

it's an adhesive gel used to secure things like pottery and vases to a shelf that is removable - it's sticky but it comes off with no mess or fuss. I think a little ball of that in a joint or chest cavity would work pretty good.

The goal is to get the plastic soft enough so the rods will pop out in the area you're working on so yeah, just dunk his leg. A little bit of heat is all you need. :]

Museum Gel? Wha?...

if I could get into the chest I might try a little aluminium foil or I have this stuff called Museum Gel that might do the trick.

Yes you boil the water. But you don't keep boiling it! I usually boil the water in a kettle, pour it in a cup and work with it for the 15-20 minutes it's still hot enough.

does anyone have any tips about how to pop the style joint they used on Hawkeye? is it similiar to the FO Punisher?

because the tutorial says Boil and Pop not Simmer and Pop and I'm a very literal dumbass.

well I has learned my lesson. besides it'll give me more paint practice. and why does ole Hawkeye have four different shades of purple and blue? who designed this freakin' costume? musta been Romita Sr.

Yeah. I have a Bullseye just waiting to die... Maybe I'll use him. He's kind of the "first" Marvel Legend I started customizing (he was going to be Deadpool), but that was before I learned you need to stir Testors paint and I really mucked him up good.

Pop off the hands of a more articulate figure maybe? (which is like, 2 figures? xD)

I totally popped him open with a screw driver! It was so easy!
I swapped his knees, lower legs and feet for the original Punisher to do my Grifter. I'm thinking of swapping the hands too because even though I don't like the first Punisher's hand, I hate this ones.

I think I figured it out last night: Pop the chest open and put glue in the click joint and keep moving it till it dries. My Face Off Punisher kept try to self felate himself so I had to do that. Also, he is the easiest figure to pop open I've had.

LOL why did you have the stove full power? Enough heat will fade even steel. I was having doubts about the glue working on chest joints, there isn't a whole lot of places you can strategically place glue for it to dry and tighten the joint. I'm so glad theyre starting to use click-joints in the ML figs! I'll try to figure out how to tighten the chest...

when you do get the water boiling, lower the heat down and basically have it "simmer" I guess thats the word....so the water stays hot but not rolling....that's what I do, and really havent gotten any problems yet. good luck!
