Where do you get your paints?

Posted in Custom Workstation

Lately I've just been using my black paints and a few drops from a Testors "Paint Starter" kit to get my figures painted. The only problem: there isnt enough variety to use nor enough of it. All of it I've gotten from Walmart so far but im looking for more of a variety of colors. Do most of you order them online or just go to the local Hobby Store? I ask because for my upcoming projects im going to need a wider range of colors and flesh paints and I know Walmart can't scratch the surface on the different paints.

Sweet! happy to hear you finnaly got all your worriors. Funny I didn't even know what I had when I bought that furry at the good will. and I did some research and this is what I discovered.

the Model colors come in gloss and flat and the GAME COLOR comes in flat. so your pals probly had MODEL COLOR with gloss.

What the...?! Did you win Jin's AoA Magneto?!

No, I won an auction that finished out my collection of figures from the Mezcotoyz "The Warriors" and some ML figs.

Well the reason ask is that some of the gamers I used to know had some of the modelers paint that Vallejo made and they complained that they were kinda shiny, and chalky. I may have to look int ordering some of this stuff...just as soon as my wife lets me buy things again, spending 300 bucks on eBay does kinda sorta not make her wanna let me buy stuff.

I'm somewhat familiar with the model paints, and was wondering if some of the colors in the new line still had a bad habbit of being kinda glossy, such as the reds and blues?

don't really know what you mean. BUT maybe this helps. GAME COLOR IS SPLIT INTO 3 CATAGORIES. 1 is game color, 2 is game ink, 3 is game color mediums.

I will post a pic of the brochure with my macro lens so I don't need to descibe it. hold on

I'm going to check out that paint, Kyle. Your resounding endorsement encourages me. I don't know where I'd find it here though. We have precious few hobby stores and they are ass far away.

It's all Wonder Man's fault!

Meh, usually for every single thing I say looks bad in a custom, there are usually a dozen more things that I like. I just don't feel like typing this out everytime:

I like the eyes
I like the suit
I like the hair
I like the gloves
I like the gun
I like the wings
I like the belt
I like the color
I like the design
I like the shine
I like the cape
I like the blah blah blah...you get the picture.

So from now on everyone assume I like your customs unless I tell you you suck

Basic differences of V-paint
-More watery
-Claims to dry-out less
-Easy-to-squeeze-out containers
-Takes longer to dry

The guy claims Citadel dries out, and it my case, it doesn't o_O Never had a problem with spraying in my face or drying, but I agree that the Citadel containers are kinds easy to pop-open accidentally...

Edit: And jeebuz, fine, I won't joke around with you anymore.

Yeh thats what I said Ass. LIKE SPRAY PAINT. quit trying to pick apart every thing I say all the time. READ CLOSER!!! and look at the damn link for the price thats why I posted it. AND I LIKE IT BETTER THAN CITIDAL (but both are great) and like I said ITS A PERSONAL OPINION. but I think you can take my work for it after 106 customs created opposed to docs 19 customs. I HAVE USED A lot OF PAINT.

and I doubt NEWBIES put ball baring in there paint bottles ever, or have never thought of it. I KNOW IT WILL HELP.

stacking papers means sour grapes doc. so lay off already.

DO NOT listen to the ranting madman!! Citadel rules over all!!!

Are these paints the same price or cheaper or more expensive?

Edit: And yeah, that's why there are ball bearings in spray cans, Kyle ;[

and heres another tip for any of you out there who do not already do this. When you buy a new paint drop a few small ball bearings in there so it mixes really good like a can of spray paint. I use steel shots from a shotgun shell. heavy and small. and also a few medium sized Ball Barings from megnet figures.

I actually Switched ALL MY PAINTS. I FOUND THE BEST PAINT IN THE WORLD (personal opinion) It is called Game Color Made By
Vallejo. They are a company in spain. I was at the local hobby shop here in my city and an old man heard me order my Model Master arcyl Fantasy paints (another awesome paint) and he was like "come here boy" it was sort creepy but then he bestowed apon me a pack of these awesome paints. "IMPORTED" he said. IT IS JUST AMAZING you must get some RIGHT NOW. It has compleatly replaced ALL my other paints. Befor I start raving about how great GAME COLOR is just read this article about it comparing it to CITIDAL GAME WORKSHOP paint. This article will tell you where to buy it also and shows you the colors compared to citidal. like citidal elf flesh and Vallejo elf Skintone. I personal will endorse this paint to the max. BEST I HAVE EVER USED.

HERES THE LINKVALLEJO VS. CITADAL

AND HERE ARE SOME PICS OF THE PAINT

AND HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF WORK

Citadel paints, man! That stuff is made of cotton candy and pixies tears! Sweet stuff!

It has a huge selection of paints with names like Scorpion Green and Ice Blue. They dry fast though so mixing them to get another color is usually annoying. If you need a lighter or darker shade of a color just go back to the store and buy that shade.

Example: You can mix Enchanted Blue with Skull White to get Ice Blue but since the paint dries so fast you'll probably not get a chance to paint much with it LOL. Buy the starter kit, it's like 20 bucks and has all basic colors, including Mithril Silver and Bronze Flesh, and even comes with a free detailing brush.

There is a great online Hobby Store that carries the Tamiya Paints that Kyle really likes and a boatload of other cool tools and gadgets that will aid in your custom work -

I will warn you - they are slow to ship though. Usually takes 3 bizness days before they ship your order. Why I don't know. Might have something to do with being slow southerners since they're in GA.

I have been buying the Citadel Paints from the one local comic store that sells the Warhammer minatures and gaming stuff. I tried it because Doc was raving about it and I gotta say I really like the way it works. You can order it from their web site.

I'm going to look into the Reaper's line too because I think ratboy is on to something there.

I get mine at one of the only hobby shops left in the Nashville area. If you have any near you that carry any kind you gaming supplies, look for Games-workshop, they make a great line of paints, or Reaper mini has some good stuff as well.
