LWes' WIP - Midnight Sons and Spider-Man customs

Posted in Custom Workstation

Hi everybody!
My big custom project is 'Midnight Sons & Friends', which includes making all the cool supernatural heroes and villains from Marvel.
Here's the figures I've made this far (and I'm currently updating fixing the figure I'm not perfectly happy with, so that's what the notes are about, what I'm gonna do with 'em)

'90s Johnny Blaze (Gonna make a brand new version of the figure)
Rintrah (Gonna resculpt face)
Mr. Termineus (Don't care about this one)
Caretaker (Already made a much better version)
'90s Modred the Mystic (I'm sculpting a jacket, jeans, boots and new hair)
Morbius, the Living Vampire (I'm working on a new version)
Jinx (I'm modifying it a bit and giving it a complete repaint)
Classic Hannibal King (I'm making a new Nightstalker version of him)
Bible John (Modifying it a bit a giving it a complete repaint)Scarecrow (Don't care)
Centurious (Lost cause)
Brother Voodoo (I've taken the entire figure apart because it was all sticky, so I'm gonna reassemble it, the same recipe, and will remake the figure with better sculpting)
Gabriel, the Devil-Hunter (I'm happy with it. Not 100% but I don't want to change it)
Wong (No need fixing)
Sam Buchanan (Fixed)
Snowblind (Pretty decent, don't care about the villains right now)
Frank Drake (Fixed)
Slaughter (It's good, don't care about the villains right now)
Classic Ghost Rider (It was a big misstake to use that body, I should have gone with a Mr Fantastic and it would have been perfect, but I don't care to update this figure at the moment)
Werewolf by Night (Modern Version) (I should repaint it. Don't know if I dare...)
Blade (Nightstalkers Costume) (Oh boy, this one is getting some major resculpt. Jacket, boots, gloves and a new head)
Phantom Rider (Needs revolvers, holsters and a new cape and hat)
Straw Man (Fixed)Shriker (Needs some work done)
Classic Morbius (Just gonna sculpt sharp nails)
Terror (Fixed)
The Living Mummy (No need fixing)
Johnny Blaze MK II (Repainting pants and fixing boots)
Son of Satan (Needs new cape)
Cody (No need fixing)
Lucas Telling-Stone (No need fixing)
Caretaker (No need fixing)
Vicki Montesi (No need fixing)

Yes, 616commando still has it, and I've sent an email to Black Arachnis asking if he's make a cast. That was a week ago and I haven't heard back from him yet, I guess he's busy or something. We'll see what happens.

Just wanted to know if there is any news on those Beetle heads.

Thanks Deadeye!
Funny you should ask about Strange, the masked magical being you talk about. He was created by Dr Strange and took his place while Dr Strange was hiding. It was a very complex storyline, you can read about it here.
Long story short; to not die, Strange (the masked figure, not Dr Strange) had to merge with another being, and he became Paradox.
I very recently read up on this because I had forgotten what had ultimatly happened to Strange. So he became Paradox, and he's still out there somewhere, so that's why I'm going to make him as a custom.
Here's what Paradox looks like:

He looked cooler as Strange, but I'm making him as Paradox since that's how he last was seen, and it'll be pretty easy to make him like that. An ML Angel body and a Moon Knight head (both of which I have spares of), and I'll just have to make a cape.

But before I'm starting any new customs, I'm going to finish the ones I'm working on (because there are already so many of them!)
It's going great. My old customs that I'm updating with new sculpting and paint are turning out much better than the originals, so I'm happy with that.

Great stuff LWes - I just love your WIPs and of course your finished product

Will be an honor adding my head sculpts to your bodies

I can't wait for your doctor strange

I saw there was a masked Dr Strange in Midnight Sons - what happened there?
Whys he wearing a mask? He does look really cool like that

Cool Evan, looking forward to seeing your figures!
To make a WIP thread for yourself, go to the "Custom Help & Questions" forum and click on the button "New Topic", and that's it.

Today I worked on my Spider-Man display. I tested putting my figures on it and I have about 40 figures already that should be on it, and then I have 40 figures that I'm making/planning to make.
60 figures will fit on it no problem, but it's going to be interesting to see if there is room for 80 figures, but that's a long time from now!
I think it's going to be really cool.

Hey LWes!

Dang, I didn't notice that there were already TWO more pages on your WIP thread since my post!

I was just waiting and waiting for you to answer...

Anyways, for Mr. Hyde, I am using a ML Frankenstein, head to toe. I made the thing he wears over his shoulders, but now I'm stuck!

I'm also making robot Silvermane out of a DC Superheroes Brainiac with a ML Loki head. If only I had the parts...

And yeah, I was also going to make J.J.'s head out of that same Punisher! Was the custom you saw made by Tinyman's customs? I bet it was!

Also, how do you make a WIP thread?

Thanks and I hope all's well!

Looking forward to seeing you figures, somethingdifferent!

I was looking through some Nightstalkers comics, trying to figure out Hanibal King's outfit, because it's a pretty strange coat he wore, and I came across this great picture of Doctor Strange:

I've been wanting to make a custom Strange so that I can have one on my Midnight Sons shelf and one with the Defenders, and I thought this picture was so cool I think I'm gonna use it, and nothing but it, as reference for a custom.

prince: I searched for info about those figures but it doesn't seem to be much and there aren't many good pictures, and since I don't know how big their heads are compared to Marvel Legends...

GJ: You might be on to something there. I have that figure, he looks really crazy mad though. I would have to resculpt his cheek and chin, but it might work.
BA will have 30 new heads added to the site in a couple of weeks so maybe he'll have it then.

Actually there is sort of....check out the picture I found in an e-bay auction

This seller also has a Pierce Brosnan Bond figure too, but the picture doesn't show the face very well. These figures are about 7" tall so they're close to ML scale. The seller is puffboystoys.

I like helping my fellow customizers when they're on a quest!

It might work but I can't tell from that picture and I can't find a better picture of the figure either.
And thanks for your suggestions BTW.

The best thing would probably be a comic book based James Bond figure, but I don't think there is such a thing

So how about this one?

Not the best picture, but it's the best I could find. It's the Martin Sheen character from the Spawn movie. The figure itself looks pretty crappy, but the head might be just what you're looking for. You might have to give him a "shave", though. And they're pretty cheap on e-bay, too (gotta like that!)

I don't know, he looks a bit young.
I've looked through most of all figures at DC Direct's website and a few ones could work, like Owlman:

Elseworlds Dark Side Superman:

I don't know, no one is a perfect match. There's a few figures that I first thought looked good but after looking at more pictures they didn't cut it.

What about the 1st Appearance Hawkman??

I know it's hard to see his head here (and it's blonde) but it might have the right look you're after.

If you want to see one without the helmet, I have one at home. I could take a pic for you tonight.

I'd like some suggestions for a head for Foreigner!

I want a head that looks as much like him as possible, I don't know many non-Marvel figures, maybe there's any DC figures or something that looks like him?
This is one of my most wanted figures to make!

Sure, tell me your ideas, I already have some of my own.
Mr Hyde: Wrestler body and head from XMC Sabretooth.
JJJ:I saw an awesome custom using Urban Legends Punisher's head, so I'm honna see if I can get one.
Silvermane: I don't quite know.

I'll post pictures of Foreigner another day. I don't have them on this computer.

Wow!

That's a lot of projects! You should try cutting styrofoam like he said. I did it once and it worked great.

P.S I've started Mr. Hyde and have ideas for the recipes for Silvermane, J Jonah Jameson, and as you know Puma. Do you want me to tell you the recipes or do you want to make up your own.

Also, please posts pics of Foreigner so I can give you some advice.

One more thing. If you don't know how to make the coat-and-cape combination for Judas Traveller, you should try taking fabric and covering it with liquid super-glue. It will get hard in about five seconds. Hope this helps.

Your Stegron looks amazing as well.

Thanks!

It's time for me to reveal my plans for my Spider-Man Customs project!
I'm gonna list all the characters I plan on making and show WIP pictures of the ones I'm working on. Of course, I'd love to hear questions, suggestions and comments.

First up is Judas Traveller, the mysterious wizard that appeared around the time of the Clone Saga and all that:

It's Longshot's head and mostly Doc Strange's body. I have yet to sculpt the hair, and I don't know how I'll make him a coat and a cape and make it look good, and not too bulky.

Kaine - Another one of my fave characters.
I'm using a Black Panther body and Wonderman head, with Elektra's hair. I've started sculpting the hair.
Most people seen to make his face covered like a Moon Knight mask, but actually on many depictions in the comics, you can clearly make out the his mouth, nose and other facial features, so I took the Wonderman head.

Scarlet Spider - In a lot of fodder I bought, I got an awesome Spiderman, but unfortinatly, his neck had been severed and the knee was glued. I fixed the knee and have sculpted over some head to make blank mask. I'll need to sculp his hoodie too, I've already tried it, but it wasn't very thought out, so I'll do it again.

Cobra - I loved the issues where Cobra and Mr Hyde appeared, so here's half of that duo. Had an extra Green Goblin and it seemed perfect for the character. Part of his legs and arms are from Mr Fantastic and the head is too actually. On one of the pictures I have, he has the same smirk as the Mr Fantastic head, and that's why I chose it.
I'm gonna make his a cape and sculpt that weird hood-thing he had then.

Carrion - It's Mr Fantastic's body and parts from Green Goblin (he switched with Cobra above). Our friend Deadeye is actually sculpting the head, so I think it'll turn out great!

Blood Rose - I wasn't going to make him, but I saw another customizer had done so, so I had to too. Sculpted the mask over Bullseye's head and I'm gonna sculpt some more stuff on the body.

Scrier - Since we usually only saw Scriers face and chest, I won't waste any more parts than that. I took an appropriate wrestlers torso I think I'll use a Akuma head. He looks just like Scrier did on a couple of pictures. But I feel hesitant about using my Akuma head, I think I'll check if anyone else has one to spare.
Then I'll make a cloak for him, and no one will ever know that he doesn't have arms or legs.

Stegron - This one I started some time ago. It's pretty much the same as the one ToyMakerB has done. Parts from KillerCroc and Venom. After I took this WIP picture, I started painting it and since then, it's been a mess. I just have to get the patience to sand down some joints and repaint it.

And here's my masterpiece:

Morbius! It's not for my Spider-Man collection though, it's for the Midnight Sons collection. I'm not finished with the body, but I think it's coming along great. Deadeye is sculpting the head for this one too, and if it all goes as planned, this will be my best custom yet.

A project I started this summer was a display for my Spider-Man shelf. The shelf has been getting crowded with my getting all the facory-made villains and the addition of my customs, so I needed a display that made room for more figures.
Here's how far I've gotten:

I'm still going to cut out some windows in the back wall, fix that balcony with a railing and fake doors leading too it. It'll fit all the mobsters (Kingpin, The Rose, Hammerhead, Black Tarantula and Silvermane and Red Skull too I think)
I will cover all the walls with putty and make it look like bricks. Here's a little test I made:

I think it can look really good.
I will also make special pegs for all the flying characters, as well as for Prowler for example so he can sit against the wall, and so on.
With this display, I'll have room for a whole lot of figures on the shelf.

As for other figures I haven't started yet:
Silver Sable, Mr Hyde, Boomerang, Juggernaut, Will-O-the-Wisp, Beetle, Puma and Solo are the ones I've planned pretty well.
I know Juggernaut isn't really a Spider-Man villain, but he's an enemy of the wall-crawler and appeared in an episode of Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends which my 3-year-old cousin loves. He always wants to watch the episode because for some reason, he loves the Juggernaut, so I have to make one!

The others on the list of characters to make are:
Foreigner, Delilah, Mindworm, Black Cat, Rocket Racer, Arcade, Doppelganger, Silvermane, Swarm, Leapfrog, Cardiac, Shriek, Grizzly, Kangaroo, Razorback, Man-Mountain Marko, Styx, Stone, Ezekiel, Gibbon, Madame Web, J. Jonah Jameson and Nightwatch.
I have know idea what head to use for Foreigner. He's one of the characters I want to make the most, so any suggestions are appriciated. He's an older gentleman of international origins who works master assassin and is in peak physical condition. He should look like a James Bond type guy. No heads I've seen while searching for a match has looked close enough to what I'm looking for. I can post reference pictures if it'll help.

And many thanks for everyones support! I get so happy everytime someone says they like the figures and want to see more. It's great to know some people appriciate what I do and it makes it more fun and gives me motivation to continue on!

edit: I forgot the Norman Osborn custom evan inspired me to do. Using Savage Dragon's head to make a figure based on Norman in the series Revenge of the Green Goblin. That one is high priority next time I buy figures for customs!
