Dumb Beginnings...

Posted in Custom Workstation

Well... I had trouble finding sculpy so I um... Bought plaster of paris thinking it was similar. I know this was a dumb mistake but I got impatient and I thought for some reason it would work... The things that I um... attempted will be destroyed and they will never see the light of day.

I used to live in Alabama. So, places you can try to find sculpy - wait where are you located in Alabama? Most of the Super Walmarts there will carry sculpy or Fimo (works pretty much the same and will get you up and running).

Next, I can't speak for most folks but I don't use molds myself I just sculpt the stuff and bake it hard or use apoxie sculpt and let it cure hard. (I have to order apoxie on line though) there's a Michaels next door to the Target I work at so I don't have far to go to get sculpy when I need it. When I am casting in plastic or metal then I use molds but the mold started out form a clay sculpture of mine so I still wind up sculpting somewhere in the mix.

I live in Tuscaloosa. I found sculpy today in a place called hobby lobby but most of the stuff I saw was for oven baking and I'm looking for some thing air hardens. I may try Fixit are the Aves stuff online.

hands... you'd be suyprised where you can find sculpey thor... First I would look at a hobby shop, if they don't ask them for an apoxy or epoxy 2 piece compound I have found these work the best. if not try some online sources for sculpt. In my opinion finding a sculpt your comfortable working with is the 2nd best thing a customizer can have. the first being imagination.

My problems right now are the powder to water ratio. The directions are for large the entire bad to be used but I don't need anywhere near that much. I live in Alabama and it seems that sculpy or similar products are not in demand down here. Btw do you guys pour the sculpy in mods or do you mold it with your hands, or both?

when I started I used duct tape, enamel, and sharpie. Don't worry you'll find some sculpey somewhere. I just use porcelain from michaels. so I don't exactyly use sculpey just a subsitute of it.

Not yet, I plan on hunting for some in the next day or so.

I know we all use different stuff here but I recommend either Aves Fixit or Super Sculpey. There is a tutorial round here somewhere bout different sculpts...

What he said! I just finished the first custom in a long time. In between I destroyed 5 figures. Patience is extremely necessary. Go check out the tutorials too. I read 'em constantly.
