Greymonk's WIP - Salaak & Sinestro Showoff

Posted in Custom Workstation

I'm working on a surprise for a friend, who wants a Red skull in Green Fatigues. Can't remember who he said drew it, but it's apparently an old depiction in comics and not common. I want to make this for the guy but it's a surprise! So, I can't go walking up to him and probing too much about what comics I'd find this in and who drew it etc. (the guy is kind of smart he'd put 2 & 2 together) so I call upon the powers of all you customizers. Any source materials would be appreciated, thank you!

your fan,
greymonk

sinestro is spot on! I've been reading the war, and your figure looks like he jumped right outta the book. Showing his scars from the older gl batttles was one of the better scenes in that first issue, awesome work

thanks buddy, I just wish we didn't have that confounded gravity working against us - seems like the 2D artists manage to skip that part of physics.

yup, in the comic he's naked in the first part. recovering from the attack on him by Hal Jordan. (hence the scars) then he grasps the yellow ring, puts on the ring, and gets all fired up, then this Sinestro Corps Suit begins to form on him. Several frames of the comic show the process. I guess if I was more of an artist it would look more like it (shrugs) oh well, guess I still have a long way to go yet.

Thanks LWes, the Salaak was a pain in the fanny as he's only about StarWars figure size or therebouts.

DTM: thanks, and actually he's putting his clothes ON...I guess that's a Glass is half full or half empty point of view there heh.

Okay I'll start with the Salaak. Obviously a work in progress as he's not painted and still needs two more arms! Started with a Showdown Mr. Fantastic ad sculpted the head and other parts from ApoxieSculpt. Lemme know what you think!

ok now on to my Sinestro Showoff. In the Sinestro Corps Special there's a pretty cool scene where Sinestro is donning his Sinestro Corps Hardlight Hologram for the first time. I wanted to capture the spirit of that scene and show off some of the scarring that rarely gets seen. Still waiting for the head so it'll be a while before he's finished, I just wanted to paint up what I had and see how everything went together. All the sculpting was done with ApoxieSculpt. Enjoy! oh yeah, the base figure for this was some type of Spiderman, I have no idea which, it was donated to me by a very kind Ratboy!

thank you friend, very much. But the improvements all come from good equipment (I.e. camera) and the help and comments and examples I get from you guys. All the tutorials and the hints you guys share freely, most recently Doc's photographing tutorial especially! Haging out on these boards and learning from you guys is helping me improve. Thanks to all of ya! I just realized today that I haven't been a member of this board for 90 days yet!

It's not that I'm not a fan... well ok, it is... but only because I've never read anything DC, heh. My next fig will be another CoH (Surprise, surprise), so I shouldn't complain about your GL fixation, right?

yes, Soranik Natu is a Green Lantern. sorry but I'll be making lanterns for a while. I plan my figures out some weeks in advance then try to assemble all the parts etc. once they begin arriving. I'll be making lanterns for many more weeks...my apologies to the non-lantern fans.

Ok so I wasn't sure weather to post this in the thread about playing with my new camera or here so I eenie meanie miney moed it and here it is...

Ok first off, I am working on a Soranik Natu she's obviously a work in progress. But in addition to that, I got this fancy new camera and a really super shiny silver posterboard (I sent my wife after silver she brought home Chrome!!) but all the same it seems to take a nice pic. Tell me what you folks think.

In case I have to mention the base figure, it's a black and yellow wasp. I cracked her open and pulled the wing posts out, glued her back together. Then used green stuff to sculpt her collar and conservatively plunging neckline and of course her ring. Painted the flesh tones with a couple of shades of red, using drybrush. tried to paint her eyes like the tutorial but I goofed em up and will have to repaint them. Her hair, for the moment, is Gloss black drybrushed over flat black. lemme know what you think, I definitely think I'm getting the hang of my new camera, I could not have dreamt of getting shots like this with my crummy sipix!!!

Definitely dry brushed, got 3 shades of Green on him but the scanner doesn't show any of it. (at least not that I can see) course, I'm color blind and can't actually see the difference between shades of colors anyway so I guess if you can see some shadow maybe some of the drybrush is showing up. I have to have my family standing by me while I drybrush or mix paints so I can go "how bout now?" about 1,000 times before I finish the piece. It's humiliating but I get by.

ok here's a WIP showing the work I've started on this custom. (am I qualified to post a WIP?) at any rate, thanks for all the help on the source material guys. I am using abanshee for this fig, I chopped the neck, shaved it down, repositioned it, added shoulder bulk, boot tucks and cuffs for the hands. The hands are from a deathlok and I've cut them down to the wrist joint. The tinfoil is acting as a barrier so my sculpted cuffs will still rotate when the apoxie cures. The head is from Black Arachnis. Thanks for looking, enjoy!

Bang! that looks like what my friend was describing. He said it was a less impressive suit than the SS uniform but that it was the suit that he was wearing most during the 70's. Thanks GeeJay!! (and everyone else!) I am most grateful.

That's how I always remember the Red Skull being depicted in the 70's and 80's. Probably from his affiliation with Hydra. Why else would a red skull faced Nazi run around in a green jumpsuit?

Hitler had the right idea, he just took it too far. He should have stopped at "we're going to make a race of super-men!" instead of crossing the line and wanting to kill all the Jews too. Silly Hitler
