Making mold of a soft head figure.

Posted in Custom Workstation

Hi, this is SRG I am new to the board. I ran in to a problem. I went to cast a Heman type figure head. You know the soft head figures ( hollow on the inside ). I put in the neck peg and was going to mold it as one solid piece as a hard head. Now her comes the problem. the Silicone I use is Mold Max 15-T from Smooth-on. I have to pressure the pot to about 40lb of pressure then bring the temp up to 200 degrees. When I did this the peg was sucked up to the head leaving no room to mount the figure to the body, and it also squashed the head. Making the face look like it had been squeezed. I understand what happen, but do not know what to do to fix the problem. Do I fill the head with something so it does not depressureized ?? Maybe someone else has come across this before and have come up with a solution. I do not want to do anything to destroy the org. part. Please HELP !!!!

It is pretty durable. I thought that I would cut it in small pieces then pack it in there. then when I put the plug (neck peg) in. the neck peg could not suck into the head and the same density silicone would be in the head that is being poured outside of the head. then when it is done I can take of the neck peg and then pull the small pieces out of the head. I think I will try this, and let you know. Thanks, SRG

Maybe you're doing the pressure too high.

I think I am going to cut up some old silicone from molds that did not turn out and stuff that into his head, then put the neck plug in, maybe that will work ????

Cotton is definitely too soft. I honestly don't think you'll be able to mold soft heads and leave them as is to send back.

I have thought of that, but I am getting the org. heads on loan. I have to send them back to the guy as they where. any other suggestion on what to stuff them with?? Do you think a bunch of cotton would do the trick ???or to soft ???

Thanks, for the welcome....

I don't think many people here do much for casting(as far as I know).
This guy has some tutorials:

You could always stuff the head cavity with sculpey, apoxie or anything else that will harden and stand up to heat and pressure.

Oh and welcome to the boards!
