"Popping" a figure...

Posted in Custom Workstation

As some of you know, I am a newbie/virgin to this customising lark, but I now have a little collection of fodder/victims to do my first custom.

I have a great deal of painting and sculpting experience from my work with metal miniatures, but what I need to know is HOW THE HELL DO YOU "OPEN" a ML figure? I don't want to simply break it!

Can anyone post a pic to show me simply what SHOULD happen and what it should look like?

Sorry to be a dork, but I'd appreciate this and I look forward to getting started!!

If knife don't help...try using a HAMMER !!!

Just kidding ...

Try this:

some plastic is hard right? Soak your figure inside hot water for a while. THis help your knife to cut open the figure easier...

Hope it helps

Dremel is a customisers best friend

use that to split the fig at the seams cleanly

Yeah...some figures are tougher than others (thicker plastic), but the procedure is about the same. If you're having a really hard time then use your dremel with a thin cutting wheel and cut neatly into the seams. Then pry apart with a screwdriver, the figure SHOULD split along the seams, just be careful when you do it. Also, remember where all the pieces go because sometimes figures have crazy internal mechanisms (like click-joints) and you need to know how to assemble them.

Helps some if you also warm the figure up before splitting the torso. But please be aware that more'n likely spliting a figure's crotch or torso WILL damage it somewhat - fortunatly, it's also easily fixed with whatever form of sculpy you prefer.

If you wanna split the chest and hip area, just use your xacto blade down the seams, it should open right up... exchanging the legs and arms are easier. Just heat up the joints and "pop" them out using either a blow dryer, heat gun or old fashioned boiling water ( just set the figure in the water for about 35-45 seconds, remove and while its still hot pop off the limbs.)
