I make a little slit in the back with the x-acto knife, somewhere where the slit won't be noticeable, then I pull the belt apart as hard as I can and hope it splits along the cut I made. Usually works!
Or at least that's one way you could do it. I recommend heating him up first in boiled water to weaken the glue that holds the belt on and soften the plastic.
