Large guns and holsters trouble...

Posted in Custom Workstation

I'm almost done with a Phantom (the Ghost Who Walks) custom made from a 15''-16'' Silver Surfer and I am having trouble with the guns and holsters-- anyone have any suggestions?
This is my first custom in at least 10 years and I am very rusty...

yikes... I am not going to pay $65 for a phantom belt to use on a figure I have probably less than $5 tied up in

try stevostoys.com, he does have the phantoms holster with guns in 1/6 scale which might fit although he may be able to make it slighty bigger.

I have some metal guns from those machines that are actually too big-- I think I might have a plastic one somewhere that may be about the right size but only one and I don't know where it's at...
I will definitely keep an eye out for those machines but I havent seen one around in years...

they always had like over size hand guns that would only fit figures bigger than 12 inches .

I'm running out of teeth on the bottom. That holster is a basic one for the 1911a. I saved the jpg. Maybe I can make a pattern out of it and when you find guns you can modify it.

well, you could always use electrical tape to make a layout, cut out the shape and tape the two halves together. Erm.. maybe..

just go post in the custom showcase and it will atleast past the time for atleast 10 posts, or to show your spam bot skills, post random stuff, like a welcome thread perhaps?

Well, you do have to make atleast 10 posts unti lyou can post links and pictures, it's protection against Spambots, in which, you don't sound like one.

best way to post links no matter what is to just cut and paste them. The irl button thingy never seems to work.

Probably as close as it'll get, I'm betting that the one he has was made just for the comic strip. Sorta as if he made it himself or had someone custom make them.

that's closer but a bit too american west looking...

That would probably be the style the guns first came with. When I looked up repro holsters they were older styled with the top flaps, personally I don't know why you'd want to not have the flaps. Good way to drop a gun lol.

This is what the pistols originally came with so it is probably closer to what he carried years ago when the strip started. I'm thinking the other holster was based on the one in the movie.

That's not the same holsters he normally wears in the comics (at least not now)-- the comic ones are more contoured and have a top flap...

well here is the holsters that they liscensed from King features syndicate who owns the Phantom.

I haven't found much in the way of patterns yet but we have a few leatherworking books here someplace.

yeah he uses colt 1911A .45s. Patterns you might be able to find online, I'll search, but you're right without guns they will be harder to make. I'll see if I can find patterns online for holsters to at least give a basic shape to work with.

My attempts thus far with vinyl haven't gone well-- part of the problem is not having a gun the right size to use for a pattern-- and I need two guns and two holsters... his holsters are like WWII era and have a distinct contoured shape and top flap.

That I might be able to help with but I can't guarantee anything. How good are you at leather work? lol. at that scale you could use very thin leather or even vinyl and make one to fit the guns. Might be able to make a mold out of carboard and sandwhich it inbetween the leather parts to hold the shape. Vinyl might be better as leather might have large grain that looks out of place.

I have searched a little without much luck-- I was more hoping for suggestions on maybe how to make my own holsters...
thanks though

I'm not really sure they make guns in that scale very often. The largest I know are all for the 12" GI joe or knockoffs. Have you googled for some? There might at least be groups who specialize in these scales.
