if your using testors acrylic yellow then just shake really well, I mean really well. Shake the hell out or that thing till it hurts. it make the paint thick and mixes it well. if that doesn't work then I would try priming the item your painting first.

Mix a bit of white paint into the yellow.Do a coat or two of this mixture and yellow will show up much better after wards. I can get a yellow onto a red in 2 or 3 coats this way.

By all that's holy yellow paint is a bitc-, er, a pain... yeah. I find a nice white base (or primer as bob suggested) works wonders.

Yellow is a pain(as well as white and metallic paints).
Did you primer the item you are painting? It may take several coats, something I'm working on now I'm on the 5th coat and it just starting to look the way I want it. They do sell thickening agents at art and hobby stores to add to acrylic paints, never used it though.
