I don't know what it's like where you are, but as long as you stay under a particular number of duplicate items (I think it's around 50) then you're not mass producing a copyrighted character. I've never made a duplicate custom figure based on prior work, but I was still worried as you were about selling my customs.

I inquired about this before I set up at booth at FANEXPO 2009 in Toronto (sort of a weak-sauce Comicon-North) to sell my custom figures.

Before I bought the plexiglass for my case and dropped cash on a table, I made sure that the convention was cool with me selling my own versions of various characters, and taking commissions for more. You should be fine. The worst that could happen is they ask you to take down an image of your work - and I've never heard of that happening in recent memory. Best of luck with your works.

Hey welcome to the forums! Its great to have you. And if you want for your shop to be packed you have got to put ads and publisize. Like I know its a comic con, but let everyone around know. You got what Im saying? Oh and what comic con is it? Is it in NC?

I typically don't sell mine to make a lot of money, just to pay for what I made and new supplies. So basically just enough to support my hobby without using my paychecks

Blayne Scott (AKA awesome customizer) has his stuff for sell at a comic shop... you should ask a local shop if you can have a little glass case set up in their store.

You would just have to check the rules of the show. I went to a horror con once and several vendors were selling bootleg movies for $3 a piece. It was allowed.

True but you know how corporations can be. I'd be happy that someone would wanna make a custom of my characters.

What do they care? Odds are the company still got the money from the sale of the base figure, whether it be DC or Marvel.

I haven't heard of many folks getting any letters to tell them to stop at least. Most companies know it's bad for business as it's not like customs are a huge pull of money away from them.

The worst you'll get is a cease and desist letter. As long as you don't mass produce, or set up a big shop, customs are pretty much ignored. Setting up a 'store' would be a bad idea in my opinion.

A lot of customizers sell their stuff...mostly on Ebay. I wouldn't try to set up a "store" but quite a few fellas do commission work and all that.
Oh and welcome to the board.
