Anybody have any ideas on the best way to cut styrofoam? I have some styrofoam saved up from purchasing items stored in boxes and padded with styrofoam. I think there are tons of uses for styrofoam if it can be cut properly, it can take on virtually any shape... as long as it will cut precisely. Problem is when I cut with a knife, it shreds more than cuts and doesn't leave a clean cut. Styrofoam would be a great fit for dioramas, stands, etc.
I found a couple styrofoam cutters on EvilBay as backup in case there aren't any available at the hobby store. Gasoline + Knife = Easily cut styrofoam. LOL. Sorry, I have to ask, how do you know that?
I just thought of something that might work if you can't get a hold of a styrofoam cutter. Gasoline will dissolve styrofoam, so in theory a knife dipped in it would cut through styrofoam easily. Just don't ask how I know that, and don't start a fire.
Seriously!? I had no idea a tool such as that even existed. You know where I'm going to tomorrow - Hobby Lobby here I come. Thanks for the feedback and advice guys, it's much appreciated. I've tried box cutters/x-acto blades and knives and they just don't seem to work. I can't wait.
If the styrofoam cuter don't work I'll try the Olfa knife.
I have a quite a bit of styrofoam, so a knife over a flame could be a bit time consuming.
you could heat a knife/x-acto blade, or any small metal pieces over a candle flame. the styro cutter also works great. its basically a heated metal wire that goes through the styrofoam easily.
Styrofoam cutter! Best thing in the world to cut this stuff with, it goes through it like butter. It's basically just a heated wire, but works ridiculously well. Any craft store should have them, probably around 10 bucks or so.
