DST Elbow Pain (repair)

Posted in Custom Workstation

Greetings!

I have a Black T-shirt Jack O'Neill DST Stargate SG-1 figure with a broken elbow joint. I would offer visuals, but I am not yet allowed such links. I have fixed DST neck pegs, but not elbows. I would appreciate any repair method suggestions, short of replacing the figure. Although replacements might be available, that is not an option in this case. Jack is a much loved figure!

Many thanks,
Fandango!

Ah...doing stupid stuff is how ya' learn. If you never do things, you don't learn. And if you do things, you're going to make a few mistakes. Just the way of life, I guess.

Well, viva power tools. I love my dremel! Just have to take it slow and careful....

That was the safest thing I could think of...I do some stupid stuff. You could drill a hole with a 1/16 drill bit(should be about the same size) and snap the head off a push tack and drive the pin in the hole. It is a little bigger and should work the same as the other idea.
Do be careful if you decide to go down this route, I have nicked a finger or two in the past while holding the item I was drilling into. Like I said, I do some stupid stuff sometimes(Like holding a thing that is 1/8 in and drilling into it with a 3/32 in bit...not much left on the sides.....very dumb ).
If this doesn't work or you are unwilling to take power tools to the figure then I don't have much else beyond replacing the figure, or the arm.

Wellllllll........
Good plan, would work if one could keep the needle hot enough. I tried a straight pen first, used a lighter, then a soldering iron, then a stove eye trying to get it hot enough. With the stove eye I could get the pen (then a true needle) very hot, but it cooled within seconds and barely made any dent in the plexy. That leaves bringing the figure dangerously close to the heat source and I am not sure at what temperature the figure's vynal and plastic begin to deform. In general, it seems the vynal is a lot more susceptible to heat than the plexy.

It was a very good try, though. Bob, thanks for at least giving it thought.

So, back to the drawing board.

So, you think the heated plexy would adhere to the metal needle. That has potential! (DST plexy is some ornery stuff...doesn't take to glues / cements well at all. But melting it is completely different....)

Bob, thank you! That's by far the best suggestion I've received and certainly better than anything I had thought of! If no other strong suggestions come in, I'll give it a shot tomorrow and see what happens!

(The Greedbay is out on this one. *This* figure must be repaired or there will be some very unhappy campers here! This poor little figure truly is much loved!)

Smiles,
Fandango!

OK, I'll tell you what I would do. Put the arm back together make sure its all lined up right, then take a straight needle(for sewing) heat it with a lighter and drive it though the elbow pin until it comes out the other side. Then take heavy wire cutters and snip the extra needle off. It should never come off, unless you grab him by the repaired arm and swing him over your head.
Again, this is what I would do, not sure about anybody else. Hope it helps.

or go get another off Greedbay(Ebay).

The cap and a tiny piece of the peg.
This is kind of a crude way to do this, but given that I can't post links....

Hopefully you can glue all of that together and get to the image.

So it is just the cap that has broke off the end of the peg?

Thanks for responding!

I am unsure how the bulk of elbow stems are made, but with this figure (and I assume most of the Stargate line) the stem is 'capped' at each end with a broadened head (about 1/3 larger in diameter than the main stem), actually part of the plexy stem itself. These caps are designed to not only keep the stem in the joint, but to also to hold the joint in shape. I first noticed that Jack's elbow was damaged when it actually looked swollen! It wasn't long after when one of the caps dislodged and fell out. Replacing the dowel would be easy enough (given that I can find one that tiny and also somewhat strong), but capping it properly may be a challenge. I suppose the original caps would have to be completely replaced....

I live in a non-city area with few resources. Is there a good source for more of the joint pins?

Well a picture would help, how do you mean broken? More then likely it is the pin that is the problem, I've noticed it with DST stuff.

1. The pin - If the pin has snapped then it is a simple fix. Just replace it with another action figures elbow pin, or wooden dowel will work too. Just cut to size, push it in(you may need to heat the arm with a hairdryer to soften the plastic). Then a little touch up paint to blend....all fixed.
Hope that helps, and welcome to the Realm.
