Making a transformer

Posted in Custom Workstation

Hey, I want to try something I've never done before. I want to make an original transformer. I'm looking for advice on how to take a toy vehicle and turn it into a transformer, I don't have any preference of style besides going from convincing vehicle mode to convincing robot mode. I want the alt mode to be a biplane, because I love biplanes and there is only ONE biplane transformer I know of, Ransack. I want any kind of advice, what toy could I cut apart, what should I use to make the limbs, how do I design it to fold in on itself. Any useful advice would be appreciated.

I got a new hero factory figure to use as the limbs base, he's 7 inches tall, so the transformer I make should be about the size of one in the TFA line. That means if I can get a plane with an 8 inch wingspan or so it should work. Again, anyone who knows where I can get a biplane that size could be really helpful.

drat, Barney Stormin fell through, turns out you can't get that thing anymore unless you pay like $40 on amazon -_- So now I'm trying to find a model biplane, the one in the above post, at the 1:72 scale, is too small, I need a plane that has a wingspan around 11 inches (that's as big as Barney Stormin was) and made out of plastic. Biplane toys and models are hard to find, and most of the ones I do find are made of die-cast metal, which I can't exactly cut apart with my dremel tool. Please help me out.

Before I go chopping up any kits I wanted to have a plan, so using some cardboard and wooden dowels I made a quick mock-up of what I am going to call Twister. Twister is a good name for a stunt plane transformer right? To my knowledge there aren't any official guys that use that name. I can't post a link, but you can see it on my DA gallery, wakeangel2001 is my name there as it is here.

cool, I just so happen to have a pile of mismatched hero factory and bionicle parts I found lying around! As for the plane, it is shockingly hard to find a decent biplane toy out there! But I think I found my base, Barney Stormin, from Pixar's cars, can be purchased from the toysrus website for only $8, and has an 11 inch wingspan. It also is a very nice looking plane, which I've already used once to make the Tornado. Can anyone think of another plane that looks that good for around that price point?
