Insect legs

Posted in Custom Workstation

Hey Guys, I am in the process of making an insect like creature for 6-7 inch figures and wanted to know if anyone had ideas on how to make the legs? I want them to be pretty sturdy to possibly support a rider. I thought about just using a dowel rod in the center to hold it up for display purposes but I would really like for the legs to function as, you know, legs. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks

Another idea that just came to me for legs is buying one of those big rubber insect toys and then coating the limbs with super glue so that they become rigid and can support more weight. I agree that the Sectaur glove puppet idea would be a cool theme for a custom insect figure.

Cannot wait to see this man, I loved sectaurs, maybe you could work the glove idea in there

Yea, I thought about him but those would be too small. What I'm trying to make is the flying insect creatures from the old Sectaurs line. The old ones had a glove for the legs that you put your hand in and those became its legs.
Thanks for the suggestion!

I am going to look up this Empress of Racnoss. What toyline is that from?

Its a Dr Who figure. Its pretty big. Seen it used to make Ambrosia enhanced Webstors a lot(plan to do the same, one day).Big pictures:

What toyline or series is an Acklay from? How big is it?
I thought about the brood queen but I think those might be a little small, but I will definitely give it a shot! I am going to look up this Empress of Racnoss. What toyline is that from?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys!

Awesome suggestions guys!I thought about the wire solution but was unsure of what kind to use(gauge, thickness, etc.) and where to get it?

You could use the legs off a Acklay depending on the size of your figure.

You could try using the legs from the BAF Brood Queen. I don't know how articulated they are, knowing hasbro it's probably not good, but they look insect like.

A wire armature should provide the support you need for insect legs. Sculpt the leg segments around the wire, but leave a small 'naked' section of wire between each segment, that will allow the leg to be articulated, assuming the wire you used is bendable. Take care though, metal is subject to stress and fatigue, and if you bend it too much, or too often, it will eventually snap.

Dowels as a core with sculpt over it would do nicely or you could get a Empress of Racnoss, she has long spider legs. The again you could pick up something like these:
Just a few ideas.
