Does the type of paint matter?

I've got a friend that does customs on all sorts of six inch figures and such. I'm just getting into the basis of customizing, and wanted to start small, like a small repaint. What I'd be mostly working on is stuff like the Marvel 3.75, DC Crisis 3.75 or the Justice League 4 inch figures. My friend said to use Enamels, but I've read on here that you shouldn't use them. I mean, I trust my friend, but does it really matter if I use Enamels or Acyrillics like some tutorials say?

I did my first two customs in enamels and they seemed to turned out well. After Dullcoating them, they didn't feel sticky to me. Maybe its just me though. Different people use different things and I think that's one of the best things about this hobby, you can make so many different things work out from different materials.

if you needed any more consensus, go acrylic. my first custom (in enamel) is sticky several years later. lol. but I keep it cuz it's about the journey ya know? I found the tutorials to be very helpful when I started. have fun!

Yeah, stay away from enamels. Enamel doesn't dry properly on the softer plastic that action figure arms and legs are made of, so your painted figure will be forever tacky.

Well, you could use enamels and sure they'd do the job. However, most enamels ha e gloss sheen to them sp you're figures are gonna permanently look like they've just been for a swim. Also enamels are well known for reacting badly with the plastic used on most action figures. This usually shows by the paints turning tacky and the whole figure becomes an absolute dust magnet
. Acrylic is the way to go.
