I'm fired up about Dark Horse reprinting the old Savage Sword Of Conan stories. picked it up yesterday and I have to say they have done a fine job. reprint style is similiar to Marvel's Essentials but waaaaay cleaner.
I'm glad that they also included the Conan stories from Savage Tales, even though half of them were reprinted in the color stories.
one thing I wish Dark Horse would do is reprint the Hour Of The Dragon story in it's entirety - originally the first 4 parts were done in Marvel's King Size Conan and then they finished it up in Savage Sword. I'd love to see DH redo it with new colors.
until then I'm enjoying the hell outta re-reading these Conan stories that I haven't seen in 20 years.
yeah, Barry Smith's Conan was cool and I really like the way Giorello is drawing Conan in the current DH series but I agree - John Buscema's Conan owned!
I think Buscema was a very under appreciated artist at Marvel - everything he did was great - I'd rank him up there with Neal Adams, McFarlane, Art Adams and the Kuberts.
Nah, Marvel conan was DA MAN! oh the old glory days of a purer marvel that cared about fans and stories, not who do will kill next and bring back to drive sales! The new ones are Okay, but give me Buscema art anyday!
It's all awesome, I liked the flashback art a lot too. I've been alternating between buying the comic and downloading it free from freecomicbooks.org so I can stay pretty up-to-date with it.
I liked the original artist - Cary Nord - a lot too. overall the art in the DH Conan has been pretty damn good. I have enjoyed the DH Conan but at the same time I've been buying the DH reprints of the Marvel Conan and they just seem to have more of the feel of the Howard stories.
have you seen the newest issue with Giorello's art?
How dare you express appreciation for a Conan series other than my preferred choice!
Yar, that's a strange thing to do at 50, the gritty art keeps me coming back for more of that comic. I think there was only one artist that I didn't like so far, too cartoony, but the rest of them were nice and gritty.
I like the original Marvel stories a bit better than the current Conan series. my problem with the regular DH Conan, at least when Busiek was writing it, was that they were spending waaaay too much time on character development. this is Conan the Barbarian - we know what makes him tick - he's not that deep. he likes gold, women, drinking and fighting. that's it. Conan grabs life by the throat and does what he wants. I like the DH Conan more since Truman took over the writing. it seems like he's trying to revive the more action oriented Marvel feel.
the stories in Savage Sword are mostly adaptations of the original Howard stories but there are a few originals penned by Roy Thomas. Thomas was very good about his adaptations too - he was a big fan of Howard and tried to stay as true to the original as possible.
bottom line - the Marvel Conan stories just moves a lot faster than the DH Conan.
did you know that DH is going to end the current Conan title at #50 and then restart it again. I don't think they're going back to the beginning again though. have no idea why they're doing it either. I really like the work of the new artist - Giorello. hope he's on the new series too.
