Your take on Superman...

Posted in Off Topic

I was just wondering what other people think about the man of steel...do you think that he is dated or does he still fly high in the comic book universe...I just want to know what other people think.

I very much dislike superman. Not only is he boring as a character, he has the power to do anything. If this was his original power, then that would have been fine, but as time goes on, writers have given him random powers, I.e. turning invisible or phasing into walls, once, then they have never been mentioned again. I dislike how he can do every and anything when it is convenient

My suggestion is to turn him into a villain. A stone cold, calculating, completely gone over the edge and way beyond being reconciled, villain. I mean you are right, he has been around for so long that everything that could possibly be done has been done...except to turn him into a bad guy in the main stream universe...not a parallel version but the current version into a bad guy. I think it would give the character depth and it would also give him some sort of dilemma as to how he will pick himself up after falling so far from grace.

Until they get some writers that can handle him he is definitely better off dead. All in all Superman has to be the hardest character to write. I mean what can you really do with the character that hasn't already been done numerous times before.

Thanks for the video recommendation....it was pretty insightful...I guess there is nothing else to do but accept the sad fact that superman is better off dead than alive.

I fully agree. If you haven't seen the Youtube video "The death and return of Superman" you should watch it, you'd prolly dig it. The beginning pretty much sum up why Superman isn't a very good character anymore.

I like that analogy...but that is pretty much what everyone that I talk to is saying...it's like he is just there for the sake of being there. I have no problem with the character whatsoever, but after talking to friends I also realized that something was off...I think "bland" would be too strong word but something close to that is what I could describe the character. Is it wrong for me to think that he was better off being killed by doomsday?I remember loving this character as a kid, but I just can't find anything appealing to him now...I sure hope that I don't offend anyone...I know supes has built the foundation for comics, however I just don't see him doing much nowadays.

If you compare Superheros to beverages then Superman would be water. He's not that interesting and he's been around forever. That's not to say he's bad, he's just the most basic archetype of a superhero that there is.

I can't stand him in new 52 but honestly wasn't in love with how he was written for a long time before...HOWEVER... I am completely in LOVE with the grounded story arc. I know its a polarizing story arc but I the side of the fence of loving it. It made me LOVE and respect Superman in ways I haven't since I was a little kid...or when I saw the Finally of the JLU cartoon where he fought Darkseid.
