Why Does This Generation's Consoles Suck?

Posted in Off Topic

It seems like each console this Generation, not counting the handhelds, have some glaring problem with them. What happened to quality control in this generation?

Don't believe me? Just look at the facts: XBox 360's Red Ring of Death has angered half of Microsoft's customer base, making them move over to Wii or PS3. Not to mention the useless HD-DVD player. PS3 promised us full backwards compatibility with the PS3, but reality is that maybe 3 PS2 games work on it. What kind of crap is that? And the Wii is fun, no doubt, but it's really just a gimmick that gets old fairly quickly. It really doesn't belong in the running against PS3 and XBox 360 when it comes to graphics and game size.

So my question is: Why the heck are they pricing these next-gen systems so freaking high when they seem to be held together with spit and bailwire?! Back in the day systems like the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo were tough little systems that could survive anything short of chucking them off your balcony; and they were $199 tops when they first came out, and $129-$149 for most of their market life.

The next generation of XBox 720, PS4, and Nintendo Whatever needs to take these lessons from the current generation and apply them to the next. All these flashy graphics and cool online features don't mean crap if the system blows or fails on you.

I think I'm gonna get a PS3 just because of two games: Star Trek Online and DC Universe Online. They've also got God of War III and Demon's Soul which I really want to play; and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is out on PS3 as well, which was my 360 addiction.

I don't' have an HD tv nor plan on getting one so I don't need and HD dvd player. This is why PS3 sales are so slow.

The only PS3 exclusive game I want to play is metal gear solid 4. Everything else is coming out for 360 and I really don't want a blu ray player and I want a system that is backwards compatible.

Ya I personally hate cheats I mean I don't even like walkthoughs it ruins the magic and fun. I will sometimes use a cheat on a second play through like after beating GTA games nothing is more fun then cruising the city without consequences.

But all that is besides the point the problem with todays systems.

The Xbox 360 was rushed out to beat the other 2 and thus released unfinished and bugged. The 360 however does feature possibly the largest online gaming community and possibly the most diverse range of games for all ranges where as its competitors strive twords one market (PS3 the hard core and WII the casual).

The PS3 iv never really had a problem with even with its massive price point it was still one of the best values among blu ray dvd players. The free online play is a massive plus over its microsoft competitor and even though there are still more then enough flaws such as a ridiculous amount of updates the system itself is fairly sound and has internet (in homes already providing a high speed modem). The lack of PS3 exclusive titles has truly been one of its major downfalls and that can be counted up to the original cost of the system I mean what company wants to make exclusives for a system most are already turned off from due to price point.

The Wii I see nothing wrong with it is during exactly what it was built to do, appeal to the casual gamer. Even today with people dissing its "Gimmick" the Wii is still selling like crack. The "Gimmick" as people call it is what makes it so accessible and loved by people who may have otherwise never played a game.
So all and all I wouldn't say there is anything worse about todays systems its just there were fewer problems with the earlier consoles as all they did was play games todays systems just have far to many features to expect it to work 100% of the time.

I would like to pride myself as a hard core gamer (I own every console in existence) and as being young enough to not be tainted by nostalgia but old enough to appreciate the classics (which I still boot up all the time)

That's just my 2 cents

I'm all for cheating when needed. I own a Game Genie and/or GameShark for most of my systems. By the way, if anyone has a Sega Saturn or Sega Dreamcast GameShark, I'm looking for those. But I only do it when absolutely needed, or if it unlocks extra content. If you do it all the time, then games become less fun.

My xbox broke.

But I was smart enough to get the store extended warranty.

It was free for me to get it repaired

My old systems (NES, SNES etc. ) are getting on in age some of them are approching 20+ years and they still work great!

I agree with this too, I hate being beaten by a computer and if you can't cheat it aint worth playing
Really? I hate cheats and cheating in games, I like using cheat options menu, if during the game I did something that unlocked me some cheat options, but those are cheats I earned.
I can take advantage of glitches and unfair conditions to win fight games and stuff, but actual cheats jsut take the fun away.
The only cheat I use is in godfather I use the money cheat every 5 mins, but only cause it's my second run in the game, I erased my previews save cause it was boring didn't have any more shops to take control, lol.

Cheating is cool!!!!!, but not against another person on xbox live, that drives me mad people who just use one move over and over again just to win...........loosers

Don't know about that one mate, My first two were the middle one and they both broke. Then I bought the cheapest one (arcade) and it's still going strong, and I got the extra years guarantee for it

it certainly is true that Microsoft inflates its sales numbers by also including the number of systems bought after the first one crapped out. Its interesting to me that there are so many Xbox fanboys even though their system is such a piece. I mean, I own one, but I don't like it as much as my PS3.

It's a ploy I think. The systems keep breaking to sell more and the better the system you get them the longer it lasts so if you get a top of the line 360 or ps3 it'll last longer than the cheaper models.

I know what you mean, Xbox 360 has to be one of the worst. I know a guy who has had 7 Xbox's, and the Xbox 360 is only like 4 years old right?

The new consoles suck because they run on a disc. Ever notice that the console durability went way down after they stopped using cartridges. Granted you would sometimes have to blow into a game for like 20 minutes but they were soo hard to break. I literally had my SNES run over and it still played games.

I'm still waiting for the Game Shark cheat codes for the new generation systems. I've become quite lazy since my younger days when it comes to gaming... I don't like being frustrated by games. I prefer to go through the motions and just enjoy the story and awesome cinematics, especially in games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill.

Too true, I'm onto my third xbox now but it's never been the red ring which I could get repaired for free. I still have my megadrive (Genesis) that I had when I was like 10, what's more it still works 18 years on, the big games companies need to know we want the next generation to be reliable especially if they keep coming up with ridiculous prices.
