I Miss Dreamcast

Posted in Off Topic

I was reminiscing today and I watched some stuff on YouTube on Dreamcast and played a little of it today. I own a Dreamcast, so I'm not truly without it, but still, Dreamcast people know what I mean. I miss Dreamcast. What happened to the innovation the Sega brought? It's just not out there anymore.

I love the oversized controllers everyone else hates, it feels right in my adult hands. The VMU screen inside completes the picture, always with something cool on it, like my old friend the Dragon from Draconus: Cult of the Wyrm. And aren't the VMUs just coolest looking accessory ever? They look like a little game-&-watch complete with a screen, and a select few Dreamcast games actually play mini-games off of the VMU. And for those of you that are too young for Dreamcast, the main function of the VMU was actually that it was a memory card. Pretty freaking awesome. And while the 360 and PS3 kick the pants off of the Dreamcast's graphics, for it's day it was a freaking beast. The graphics wowed us like none before it. PS1 and N64 were 3D, but Dreamcast was smooth-looking 3D vs. their blocky looking 3D. And this thing was internet ready and HD TV ready, the first of it's kind! I immeadiatly fell in love...okay, I admit it, I was already in love with Sega, but Dreamcast still knew how to make a guy happy. And with such great games as Phantasy Star Online, Sonic Adventure, Shenmue, Marvel vs. Capcom, Quake, Soul Calibur, and so many others it has a game library that makes systems with double Dreamcast's life-span jealous.

As I was reminiscing about Dreamcast and looking stuff up, I came across something cool on the web. Everyone seems to know about Sonic the Hedgehog 4 coming out now, it's a completely new 2D Sonic adventure coming out for Wii, XBox 360, and PS3 in the traditional Sega Genesis Sonic style. But what I found out is that Sega is also releasing it for a yet to be announced 4th platform. I'm thinking that 4th platform is probably on cellphones or PC. But can there possibly be a ray of hope for Dreamcast 2?

I also loved the dreamcast, it was waaaaaay ahead of its competitors. I think people just weren't ready for it, I was and I miss proper Sega too, always my favourite since the master system or whatever you called it in America, game gear over game boy, master system over nes and Megadrive (genesis) over snes. Dreamcast over the ps1, N64 and that darn awful thing Nintendo called the Wii.
