They Don't Make 'Em Like They Used To

Posted in Off Topic

I'm talking about video games, of course. I'm getting to the point where I'm coming to realize that I'm no longer the demographic the video game industry cares about.

Who do they care about? The FPS fans, that's for sure. I think the modern younger generation just has different tastes in terms of video games. The only games I've found I even marginally like are MMOs. Console games are dead to me... Aside from Wii Bowling (and I don't even play that very often), I regret having bought my consoles. I was talking to a friend of mine who's only a little younger than me.... he too grew up on the video games of the late 80s and early 90s... The old FF series, wonderful turn based RPGs and of course... GAME SHARK. Man I loved Game Shark. I don't even think they're planning on making anything like that for the new consoles.

Maybe I've just grown out of video games in general...

I have discovered my salvation... the Dragon Quest series for the DS.

They are turn based with "an old school" feel... "A Slime appears! xMain Characterx Attacks and deals 31 damage! The Slime is defeated! xMain Characterx gains 6 xp and 4 gold". I love that stuff.

The real gem though is Dragon Quest IX which just came out. It is totally 3D but maintains everything I loved about the previous DQ games. If you feel as I feel about modern games and wish they made old style turn based games again, check out the Dragon Quest games.

don't the God of War games have that? and GR allows you to play through it as Blade

to be honest, I've still got a PS2, I play Battlefront 2 on third person, I play Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, The Godfather, GTA:VC,
but when I play my freidns 360, Saints Row 2 was great, and Assasin's Creed 2 is so fantastic, I love it, and think if they ever do a Daredevil game thats the way they should tackle his gameplay, with combat like Batman: Arhkam Asylum.

I haven't seen that sorta thing since RE2. remember the cool secret stuff in the us version of FF3 like finding otu who shadow was? Or just small things like in secret of mana where there are hints that that world is really ours (there is a temple with orbs with old tv shows on them and one is an episode of Jeapordy).

Whatever happened to actual unlockables? Like at the end of the game you unlock the ability to replay the entire thing with everything you earned through it, or when you unlock a character that plays completely different from the regular guy?

Or they aren't very good codes. the codes back in the older systems seemed more impressive as did the games, maybe it's just me lol.

I miss cheat codes too. Now even the few games that do have them often don't allow saving or achievements/trophies if you use them. I can understand the latter, but no saving?

Games are too hard nowadays, that was my point. That or I've become too lazy. I want my god mode for the modern Resident Evil and Silent Hill games! *Stomps foot*

I grew up in that golden age where I was old enough to enjoy the SNES/Genesis, but young enough when the N64/PSX came out that I can say I "grew up" with all of them. While I agree that older games are amazing (I still think there has yet to be a console FPS thats better than perfect dark), I disagree with anyone saying that games now "suck". The thing about the really great games now is that they offer something that older games just couldn't: A fully rounded, interactive entertainment experience, that can rival what you would find in television or cinema. I'm a Game and Simulation Programming major (yes, its a real thing now), and I think we're now in a new age of amazing games. There are just things that can be done now that are outstanding. Its just that a lot of the truly great games aren't always the ones that are also super popular. Games like Shadow of the Colossus, Okami, The Legacy of Kain series, God of War, Mass Effect, Bioshock (though those last 3 doesn't really fall under the category of "not super popular", the 2008 Prince of Persia, just to name a few.

However, if you need one undeniable piece of proof that games are still great, you need to play Red Dead Redemption. What Rock Star has accomplished is simply amazing. Taking what works in their GTA games, and transporting it to the Old West makes for a really great experience, especially anyone who like me, has an appreciation for westerns. You're doing yourself a disservice if you don't play that game.

I agree with the OP. FPS is very over exposed, as is its illegitimate child, over the shoulder 3rd person shooters Especially now days, it panders to the kind of people who I personally wouldn't want to associate with. The kind who spend all their time in online multiplayer, tea bagging every kill, and screaming their lungs out at anyone who is just there for fun. Unfortunately, they're also the ones who go out and spend the money.

The gaming industry is not unlike the film industry. They will turn out schlock regularly, as long as it puts asses in seats. You can't really blame them for it, they've gotta stay afloat, and the sad truth is that the games that are truly, truly wonderful never sell nearly as many copies as the blockbuster games. On top of that, even bad games cost a RIDICULOUS amount of money to create, doubly so for the ambitious ones. This is especially a problem right now, since the industry just took a really huge hit this last quarter, so companies will start "trimming the fat" and only produce games that they know will bring in big profits, like your Halos, Call of Dutys, and Gears of Wars. So if you want to see more great games, you have to go out and buy the ones that already exist.

Edit: Oh, and anyone who thinks that games aren't hard anymore should play Demon Souls... pfft... man, forget about it. Also, if you're looking for a challenege, try out Ninja Gaiden 2's Path of the Master Ninja difficulty. By the time you're done, you'll wish you had just killed a baby instead.

Me too I don't care what anyone says. I like old school RPGs and RPGs in general and I'll play stuff that most people don't like because it means it's probably pretty good and they're too dumb to notice.

I can't tell... are you saying FF 13 is good or bad?

I asked my friend about FF 13 and he told me it was utter crap. That the characters are boring and either so cold they'll turn your blood to ice or whiny crybabies. That the combat system is laughable since there's an option to "auto-fight" and detect the attacks that will do the most damage to the enemy with one button. That while you're choosing your combat options the enemies will keep attacking you... That last one would kill it for me, personally. I like to take my time in a FF game's combat, and that effect, while I'm sure is intended to give a feel of real time fast paced combat is just annoying. I've played other games like that and I never played past the first few fights because of it. I was interested in checking the game out until my friend advised me not to pick it up. Has anyone had a different experience with the game?

Baaaaad, all of the above are the things that have really annoyed me about the game, plus 7 was like 60 hours worth of play but my mate is on disc 3 after just 22 hours.

My favorite game of all time is probably Megaman Legends 2. I'm actually replaying it for the 5th time. I like to just pick it up every few years and run through, I dunno why I always end up wasting 20+ hours per play through, but it feels so worth it.

Current gen games are pretty decent, I know of quite a few non-fps games that I love.

Deadly Premonition, Demons Souls, Just Cause 2, Saints Row 1 and 2, Soul Calibur 4, Uncharted 1 and 2, and many others. There are even FPS games that I, a person who is very again FPS games, loves. Bioshock 1 and 2 are incredibly thrilling, Metro 2033, and Fallout 3 kinda. Ok, Fallout 3 isn't really an FPS, but it's first person combat grew on me quickly, very quickly, though I do all my exploring in 3rd person.

I completely agree! Remember back in the day where it took serious skill to beat a game, now it just takes time. There are some old NES games that I still haven't beaten.

NES, SNES, & Sega..thats all you need.

I love the current gen consoles, my 360 is the second most important thing in my life (my son being the first). However, I do agree there are far too many FPS games about, I mean they're all the same run about, shoot some stuff, run about some more. I never play them anymore Doom was the pinacle for me. I prefer to play fighting games and sports games on mine. Oh and final fantasy 13.........not a patch on 7.

I almost exculisevy play the old 8 and 16 bit systems.
