Halo 3 ODST

Off TopicWho got it yet? I got mine at midnight (hated gym today lol) I can't play mine yet though, because of the Red Rings o' Death
... for those of you who've played it, what did you think? can you turn off that thing where it traces the enemy with a red line? (that looks annoying) I played multiplayer, pretty cool maps... not bad.
what's Halo Reach like (strategy, or 1st person shooter)? have any of you played the demo that comes w/ ODST?

Please wait...

Probably didn't help first time I tried playing through I had it on "Heroic".
Had to restart due to Hard Drive/MU swapping screw up, And now I'm playing on "Normal".
mostly cause I suck at the multiplayer
I like the halo games. I own them and I do not plan on trading them ever. I just think they are hyped beyond their ability to fulfill.
as for your points on what makes the games great, I have to disagree with you on some point, and strongly agree on others.
graphically, I didn't think the halo games were anything special. especially the environments on the early games. I actually thought the back grounds were horrible. I understand why. they were the best environments they could provide to leave room for all the player controlled characters in multiplayer, but the fact that they were the best they could be in their situation doesn't make them good.
I do have to agree that the voice acting is extraordinary for video games, and I have already posited that the story is good. best sci fi ever, I think not. best scifi story in a video game, maybe, but the halo games have nothing on bradbury, gibson, asimov, and early card.
I have also pointed out the good multiplayer as well, and I believe that is the main draw of the halo games. before halo games tended to have a focus on either single player/campaign modes, or multiplayer battles. halo did a wonderful job of blending the two modes and making both major modes quality. I do have to give it that.
I found gameplay to be mediocre. not bad at all. the controls are intuitive, and it is an easy game to pick up for the first time and get into the action right away, and it can keep you challenged for a good period of time afterward, but that should be expected in modern video games. I know it is not always the case, and it seems to be getting more rare as the years go on, but there have been a hearty number of games to come out with (in my opinion) much better gameplay (ease of use, building challenge, immersive experience, and continuing fun of playing).
one thing I do have to agree with you on is the masterful audio work on the games. and not just the score, but all of the sfx. it is done beautifully, and I have no complaints in that department.
again, I just want to say I am in no way saying the the halo games are not great, but that they are simply not the greatest. this is but my humble opinion that I as a person who has been playing video games for almost 24 years offer to my peers with similar experience.
I just must say it is refreshing having an interesting, mature discussion and debate on such a topic on the internet. very refreshing.
halo is a good shooter with a passable story, but it is not the greatest game ever. it doesn't belong in the conversation about the greatest game ever. it doesn't even belong in the conversation about the greatest shooter ever.
it is a good entertaining game though, and the online play is very good. I hope when I finally break down and buy it, odst changes my mind. not betting on it though
You're absolutely crazy. The Halo games most definetly deserve to be in a conversation about the greatest shooter ever. It's production value is that of a blockbuster movie: Incredible graphics, beautiful soundscore and sound effects (all of them had full orchesta soundtracks, and Halo 2 even secured the Hard Rock band Breakin Benjamin!), top-of-the-line enemy AI, great acting and dialogue, and the story is one of the coolest sci-fi stories I have ever had the pleasure of following. But more importantly, the gameplay is top-freaking-notch. The difficulty level is grueling at Hard & Legendary, and just right for Easy & Normal. The enemy AI adapts to you and anticipates moves as the game goes on. The environments are beautiful to look at in the few moments of respite you do get. And the action is INTENSE! The multiplayer mode is one of the best multiplayer modes I have played since the old days of Descent on my PC, and that's includes both online and offline multiplayer.
The fan following, the sales numbers, and online popularity are a testament to the series. And The Master Chief has become an Icon, appearing in countless ads, comics, posters, toys, movie-shorts, and spoofs. It's also known by most fans by now that a Halo movie is in production as we speak. If Halo isn't so great, then why has it acheived so much?

*Also Id like to celebrate my 666thpost! YEAH!
I've been a Playstation fanboy up until I broke down and got a 360 just a few weeks ago.
However,
Maybe my expectations were too high? Or I just havent dove into the online multiplayer yet... But, It's not all I was expecting from all the hype.
Probably just me.
It's pretty good. There were a couple of times where I found myself without the right weapon for the job or completely out of ammo and nades. I mean seriously, there was one point where I had to take out 2 hunters and a pack of brutes, I killed one hunter and about half the pack of brutes and I was out of ammo and nades and couldn't find anything to fight with. Eventually I found a sniper jackal snuck on him a melee'd it to death.
Now I said I beat it in about 8 hours, but I still have 20 or so audio logs to find in the city so that will probably take a few hours at least.
To answer your question TNC, you can turn off the outlines. When you have them on you're in VISR mode which you'll want to have on most of the time to be able to see where your going and where the bad guys are.
Haven't played Reach yet, I don't think the demo is out yet.
Just rented it from Blockbuster, My "Halo Edition" 20gb Hard Drive was waiting on my doorstop when I got back, And im ready to frag some bitchez.
