Your Favorite 5 Anime of All Time

Posted in Off Topic

What do people like in terms of anime? Old school stuff or new stuff?

My favorites are:

1. Ranma 1/2, a story about a high school boy who is cursed to transform into a red haired female version of himself whenever he is splashed with cold water, hot water changing him back into a boy. Add this to a fiance, Akane that wanted to be Ranma's fiance as much as Ranma wanted to be hers (ie, not at all), hilarious hijinks ensue. Oh, did I mention that Ranma and most of the supporting cast are martial artists? I haven't recommended this anime to anyone, guy or girl who didn't end up enjoying it. This anime was originally released in 1989 in the US. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranma_%C2%BD

2. Bubblegum Crisis (the original), is a far cry better than the more recent version. Nene was cuter, the fight scenes were better, the animation was better, and even though Priss was just as annoying, the original series was just all around a better anime imo. This anime was originally released in 1987 in the US. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bubblegum_Crisis

3. Record of Lodoss War. If you are a fan of the High Fantasy genre (like Dungeons and Dragons for example), you'll love this brilliant epic story about a party of adventurers led by Parn, the son of a famous knight of legend. This anime has some of the best animation I have ever seen done, period. I highly recommend this series. This anime was originally released in 1990 in the US. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Record_of_Lodoss_War

4. The Slayers, an anime centered around the adventures and hijinks of Lina Inverse, sorceress for hire and Gourry, travelling swordsman is a great one, with the perfect blend of adventure, comedy and action. This anime was originally released in 1989 in the US. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Slayers

5. Akira. What can I say about arguably the single most well-known anime movie in history? If you haven't seen it... see it. This anime was originally released in 1988 in the US. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akira_%28film%29

Probably because teh anime adult swim shows these days is crap they know will be popular. I miss it when they showed stuff most people only knew about from fan subs and such. I forgot Big O which was thought up when the company that made it was animating Batman the animated series.

To be honest I had a friend that pretty much ruined me on anime....I'm finding it harder and harder to watch saturday nights on adult swim for that very reason.

Cowboy Bebop! Greatest anime of all time! NOTHING EVEN COMES CLOSE! I'm also partial to:
Inuyasha
Cardcaptor Sakura
Pokemon
Chobits
Anything by Satoshi Kon and Miyazaki

To be honest the older I get the less I like some anime. The animation just isnt that good. Give some good ole american Animation any day (although most of those cartoons are drawn in Asia anyway) E.G.

Batman the animated series
Spongebob
The Simpsons
Animaniacs
Looney Tunes
and most of the old Disney stuff.

Some family dollar and dollar generals do, not as much as they used to. I found a bunch of anime at the Biglots chain of stores but half the time they'll have the entire series but one volume lol.

Somehow I knew this thread would get into hentai eventually. Some hentai is decent...it just depends. Mystery of the necronomicon is actually pretty good and has a good story...of course, not for children. La Blue Girl freaks me out...that tentacle business is disgusting and unfortunately very popular in horror hentai. Black Gate is also decent, as is Behind Closed Doors. Again, no one under the age of 18 should be watching this stuff.

Your Dollar Stores carry ANIME?!

lol. I think demon beast invasion was the first of that type I saw and frankly its a sub genre of hentai I'd rather avoid. I don't like horror anime and even less xrated horror anime. Most of the anime I get is from the dollar store and is all from the mid 90s.

Ahhhh yes, I knew it by Legend of the Overfiend. I really categorize Hentai as being separate from Anime.

"Newer" to me is anything that was released in the late 90s and sooner.

Yep. Well XXX over here means you have to be over 18 to rent or buy it. I've seen most of those types and I have more than a few of the non violent adult anime (yeah I know what a shock right? ).

XXX??, yeah I suppose it deserves it, ours is just an 18 though, I think you have stricter rating systems over there, ours only goes up to 18. Have you seen it Seph?

Urotsukidoji is super old, it was released here in England in 1989, you may know it better as Legend of the overfiend or legend of the demon womb. It's pretty hardcore manga though so I'm just warning violence and sexual content so I won't be posting a trailer for this one.

Edit: actually the triler is pretty clean so here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKb8mrxpFPQ

Perfect Blue maybe Black swan in US was released here in 2000 and is described as " a startling and powerful film. If Alfred Hitchcock partnered with Walt disney they'd make a picture like this". It's done by some of the people who worked on Akira and Ninja scroll and is about identity theft and pretty gritty. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0Rj7nn0ZVs

Dead Leaves is the newest of the bunch in 2004 and is by the producers of ghost in the shell. It's about earth in the near future where the only humans that remain are clones. The story is kinda hard to follow though as you're just bombarded with colour. Here's a trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YV_DY0BGscE
