The frustration of working with fabric!

Posted in Custom Workstation

Hey everyone!

So I'm working on a Maleficent figure for a client. It has got to be about the most challenging figure I've ever built for the reason of the soft-goods costume I'm constructing for it. It's getting very mathy! Geometry! Patterns! All totally vexing me. Getting the cloth to hang correctly so it doesn't just foof out, getting the stitching size to seem consistent with the scale of the figure, it's all JUST ABOUT TO DRIVE ME MAD!!!

Has anyone got any experience building something like this? I'm basically teaching myself to sew again (because I've mercifully blanked out all of my Jr. High home economics classes where I learned it the first time.)
Any good links to building doll clothes? I've searched and searched but have found very little on the subject.

Thanks for any info/knowledge you can pass on!

Started with the Wasp body, but didn't like that she couldn't grip. The hands came from a Mr. Fantastic figure, I think it was the Toybiz FF series, but many years ago since I bought it and hazy in its origins now...lots of Aves for the horns, which I had to do a few times before I was happy with them. This was a really complex figure to wrap my head around - had never made a soft goods figure before, quite a different beast, and used parts of my brain that don't see a lot of action! The staff and her shoulder both have magnets in them salvaged from some of my kids Littlest Pet Shop toys, so the raven can perch on either. A few more details and it will all be finished!

There's tons of tutorials on Pinterest for designing and sewing doll clothes. I could try to snag a few links if it would help

I'm good, I think I've got it. Thanks for the Pinterest suggestion, I forgot about them.

Similar process regardless of the size, quadruple the frustration working on such a small scale. It's been quite a challenge, but I've made some progress. Thanks for the glue tip, Doc, but I'd already committed to delivering something that was sewn, otherwise...

Im no help, but I imagine the process is the same no matter the size of the clothing.

Imaginary Pro Tip: Use contact glue whenever possible to bond pieces together. No sense in stitching things youre just going to turn inside out anyway to hide the seam.

And remember to keep the patterns you make for future use, save yourself a lot time.

I may be overlooking it, but I don't see any option on this page to include a picture, otherwise I'd share my progress.

You can still post images like on any other place, get the direct link for the image and put it between image tags

Granted, they seem to stay at that smaller size, but you can just post the direct link too.
