Wanted to start using primer again so I don't have to lay down so many coats of paint, what brand are you using?
I tried a generic looking can on a DCUC figure. It's called "Touch N Tone", it's a general purpose primer. It sprays great, it mists onto the figure for a flawless application, doesn't muddy any details. However, it made the figure sticky :/
Rustoleum's Self Etching Primer is crap for figures, it sprays on and leaves an annoying gritty texture so you have to wetsand after. I bought it to paint steel plates and it worked fine, that's what it's made for after all, but it creates too much post-work for figures.
Tamiya's Fine Primer is nice, but the price is ridiculous so I need an alternative.
Sprayed some more pieces, apparently if you shake the can enough the primer sprays on even smoother, so thats cool. Still no problems with it using Formula P3 paints on top.
I painted a few pieces after using the primer, good results. The primer sprays on smooth, it has a faint texture but I can't really tell unless I'm focusing on it. Once painted over its even less apparent. If you really want a mirror polish you can wetsand it with fine sandpaper once it has fully cured.
A few minutes after spraying you can handle the piece, but just leave it alone. After about an hour you can paint over it. No stickiness at any point
Alright, I found a can of the Krylon Colormaster Primer, it's the non-Fusion kind because it's the only one that come in grey. I'll try it tomorrow and report back a day or two after on how it worked.
Which one? They have like 4 different kinds of primers. Sounds like it has a great property, but it's only found in Europe so I'll have to keep looking haha
I absolutely love Duplicolor's Vinyl and Fabric Spray. Goes on super thin and smooth and paint adheres to it perfectly. Can be found at Autozone and comes in a lot of colors.
It's technically a coating. OJJ and Fast Freddie suggested it to me a few years back and I haven't changed since. It's great because it's really durable and the color choices. I also like it because it is really flexible so I can't paint capes now without worrying about them flaking with movement.
Does it help paint stick though? That's the property I'm looking for since I want to paint over it with the usual acrylics, that's why I'm looking for primer.
Good to hear it lasts on flexible stuff though, I have a few capes I need to paint soon.
Yes, paint adheres to it extremely well. It also holds up if you make a mistake and want to use water to wipe away the paint mistake (since you are using acrylic).
I use Krylon Colormaster, and I have never had any problems. I can only vouch for the grey and the white primer, the black may be utter junk for all I know.
