I've seen a lot of customs where people used dye to change the color of a figure. I tried changing a classic red and blue Spider-Man into the black symbiote Spider-Man, but after a few hours of work, the figure came out of the black dye... red and blue. So it didn't work AT ALL. And FYI, I did remove ALL paint from the figure before-hand, so nothing was blocking the dye.
Has anyone had luck dying a figure? And if so, what brand of dye did you use and what process did you follow to do the color-change? I was following a tutorial when I tried mine, but the figure in the tutorial went from bright yellow to black, and mine (as I said earlier) went from red and blue, to red and blue.
Dr Nightmare... Does that VHT Vinyl Dye work on normal action figure plastic? I would just paint the stupid thing, but there are so many joints in the Super Posable Spider-Man 2 figure, that I'd end up with red and blue streaks all over the place. And the articulation is the reason I chose to use that figure.
The only time dying worked for me is when dunking resin pieces, they absorb the dye well.
Try VHT Vinyl Dye, call your autoshop and ask if they have it. As far as I know it's the only true spray dye, it penetrates into the plastic. I use it on almost everything as a basecoat to cover the wacky multicolored figure parts. Its great on joints especially, you just have to do the usual light sanding prep work to let it penetrate.
It comes in lots of colors too, it should be about 7 to 10 bucks a can, 12oz
